Nostalrius Begins - Quality wow vanilla realm (1.12)

Hi everyone
(I wasn’t really sure on where to put this, so I’ll leave it under the general topic)
I recently started my adventure on Nostalrius and I’m enjoying the ride so far! What a great server and community. However, I’m experiencing an issue related to my monitor’s resolution.

I’m using a widescreen monitor (21:9 aspect ratio, resolution 2560x1080). This resolution seems not to be supported by the 1.12 client. I’ve tried the following to solve the issue:
- Change the resolution in the .wtf file: does not work. If set to 2560x1080, the .wtf file will just put the settings to the default value (800x600 or something). A Google search provided me with many users that were able to get this to work. Alas it is not working for me…
- Enter the 2560x1080 via the console menu (in-game): I’ve followed the steps described in the following guide explaining how to tweak/improve graphic settings. The guide also includes a setresolution command. If I enter “gxResolution 2560x1080” the console forwards an error, saying the resolution is not supported. If shows a list up to 1920x1080. On my Surface Pro (which has a resolution of over 2000x1000) I’ve encountered no resolution settings at all, so it seems a resolution over 1920 is indeed supported/possible.

Does anyone here has any experience with getting the widescreen resolution to work on the 1.12 client?
Any tips or pointers in the right direction are highly appreciated!

If you're using an nVidia card, you may need to go enable DSR, dynamic super resolution, which opens up higher resolutions in games. If it's an AMD or Intel chip, I'm not sure.

Ive read a post on another forum that 21:9 is compataible without any issues i would just like it confirmed and hopefully a SS

I picked up an ultra-wide 21:9 monitor yesterday. When I launched it in classic wow, it looked bad, and I shut it down. Because I wanted to test out the monitor, I tried it on retail wow and the visual looked great. I shut down my rig for the night.

So, this morning, I launched classic wow (and I was accepting that I wouldn't get my desired resolution) and a pop-up said that my hardware has changed and whether I wanted to use default settings. I say "no" and it launched at 800x600. "How quaint", I thought, as I rushed to the video settings. To my surprise, the video settings now listed 2560x1080 (it didn't yesterday). I select that and the game display for classic wow is perfect. Here is a screenshot of my monitor (not the best picture but you get the idea):



I am wondering if by launching in retail wow, it somehow enabled the higher screen resolution support for my classic wow. No idea as I'm not a techy, but somehow it worked. If any of you guys are having troubles with your resolution and want to ask me a technical question for me to look up on my system, I'd be happy to help.

This is awesome news! I'm hoping to soon get either the Acer Z35 or the original non g sync BenQ version. Both are 2560x1080 which I think is more than enough resolution. The extra real estate horizontally for both immersion and utility (add on space) is what I find most appealing. Thanks so much for this post Sharax. When I do end up getting the monitor, I'll hit you up : )

None of these helped me.
I have 2 monitors.
I changed setting from extend monitor to show desktop only on 1 (my ultra wide).
Then the option to set to 2560x1080 was available in game.

Sharax's method worked for me. Initial login with WoW Classic did not have any res higher than 19820x1080 so I reinstalled retail client and even as that was still downloading, I opened up retail, set the res and refresh then closed retail, opened Nostalrius and both 2560x1080p and 144hz showed as available in settings. It may be important to also note that as Sharax said, there was a pop up box that indicated new settings and asked to revert to default at which point I clicked no. Acer Z35 is insane btw I'll try to get pics up soon.
