High FPS but game is very choppy and slow. Any help?

by Zmurkz » Sun May 10, 2015 2:31 pm

Hey Nostalrius.

I've had this issue ever since I've started playing. (I even went to Kronos to check if it happens and it does), but my FPS is very high and never drops, but my game is really 'choppy'. Choppy is the best word I can use, it's not smooth and camera movement is really sluggish and choppy. Same when I move my character around.

If I turn ON 'vsync' and 'triple buffering' the issue is alleviated a bit, and the sluggish choppy stutter isn't as bad, but it is still there. Anyone know why this happens? Can I fix it? I play on retail and have a WOTLK client and it doesn't do it on those.

As I said, my FPS is always very high 100+ or a solid 60 with vsync on. My PC specs are below.

i5-2500k 3.30ghz
GTX 570
4GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

Thanks for any help.

I have the same issue (I think), and it's quite distracting at times. It kind of seems like a problem with the game's internal tickrate or something. The framerate is 60+, but all movement in the game is disrupted by a stutter/frameskip every half-second or so. Also, turning my character with the mouse or A/ D keys results in some really buggy turning animation - the character will either re-orient itself in a very slow and choppy fashion, or just won't turn at all.

Out of curiosity, do you also have the issue with your character's shadow being off-centre? My character's shadow appears to the left and back slightly from the centre of where my character is standing (like this). If so, we're in the exact same boat.

I'm using very different specs from you (AMD CPU + AMD GPU), so I'm glad to see this isn't specifically an AMD issue.

Did u try Vsync ?

Will also let ur gr. card cooler i guess.

Read the thread. The problem persists regardless of which vsync settings are used.

Trying right clicking the game icon and open the game with "run as administrator"

Try ticking the "Windowed mode" and "Fullscreen" options in video settings, gameplay got considerably smoother for me.

Here's a 60fps YouTube video demonstrating the problem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tpnc4zEUow&hd=1

Focus on a single object in the room while my character moves and you'll see what I mean. Constant frameskipping is the best way I can describe it. Also in the video, you can see the other issues I'm having, like the buggy turning animation and the misplaced character shadow.

Is this similar to what you're getting, Zmurkz?

I tried playing around with the console variables listed under "maximum smoothless", but no luck. I even considered if this might be an issue with multi-core CPUs, so I set WoW.exe to use only one core, but no difference. :(
