Name Unavailable (?)

Earlier I tried to create a character with 5 or so different versions of the same name, all of them were 'unavailable'.
So out of curiosity I decided to make a test character and /who the names to check the level of those who took them. Does /who only work for logged-in characters? Because not one of the "unavailable" names showed up on either Alliance or Horde characters.

Also, despite the server's high population I never expected the name game to be this hard, do people just claim names on level 1 characters and leave them there or something?

There is over 7k players online at the most.
If you fill your character list you have 11 characters per player
That is a total of 77000 characters per account.

If your name is a popular/common/known name it might have been taken by now sadly

Yes, /who only returns characters online. Yes, people do claim names and park the toon for a later date.

What a rude thing to do, I'd never do that. Well I guess I'll resist the temptation to spell my name entirely in french-accented letters, wish me luck!
