Names taken

Hi, there -

I've been trying to log in for about 30 minutes now, and every name I type in is taken. I've played many MMOs over the years, and have had many names, some quite unique, that I can't possibly imagine have been used up in a private Vanilla WoW Server. "Shmerg" for example has been my go - to name for any game, ever. Can you please let me know if it's something on my end?

Thanks,

Pavel

Try something completely random like xhttgiquqwe and you'll know if it's a real problem.

Real random names are available. But really, haven't played WoW, GW, GW2, EQ, Project 1999, etc etc....I've never run into a situation on servers 5-6 years old where some of these names were taken. Find it pretty hard to believe that a server since February would have the name "Ketosis" taken.

Is there someone you can petition about names/availability?

The staff doesn't free up or delete names associates with accounts from what I remember. A lot of people will create level 1 alts with popular names just to hang onto until they decide to roll the character at a later date. That or sell/trade the account which is against the Terms of Use.

But this is my point, I'm not making names that are popular or have ever been taken in any other MMO I've ever played.

I'd love confirmation from someone on staff that the names Mahler or Shmerg are actually taken (There are many others I've tried, but those would be the only one I'm interested in more than others).

If you can't create a character with those names they are either hardcoded bans for the names or taken in the database. I don't understand what's not to get here.

The point is there's no way all those names I put in are taken (and shouldn't be hardcoded bans seeing as how they were fine for me when I actually played WoW). What's hard to get here is how a server that's less than a year old has every one of these names taken, when other MMOs that have vanilla versions (EQ and Project 1990, for example) are 6 years old with hundreds of thousands of accounts, and the names aren't taken. I'd appreciate an answer from someone who actually can confirm what I'm asking, not just troll nostalrius message boards.

I'm not trolling. I'm stating a fact because I know how shit is run server-sided.

First off, I don't care about other games. Name reserving has been a thing for years on WoW which is a game made over 10 years ago rather than 6. Just because it seems unique doesn't mean it is unique. If the name has been used at least once by anyone, the public has already seen it and could take the character name. Someone who seen you play with the IDs could easily reserve the name on a level 1 toon and not play the character at all. It's purpose is to either sell the name for gold (allowed) or just keep it to his/her self.

You already covered that other names do indeed work when you create a toon so creation isn't a problem.
You covered that you can successfully create and play a toon so that's not a problem either.
You have confirmed that the names you entered are used or hardcoded client banned by using the name -- that's not a problem either.
What you haven't done is add the toon to friends list to see which faction owns the name and see if a person is playing on the character name. The best way to confirm if the name is taken is by doing this.

Now if you can't add the name to your friends list on either faction, it is indeed a hardcoded ban for whatever reason.

Am I still trolling now or did none of this seem useful to you because you think a staff response means everything in the world because the community knows fuck all about the first step of creating a character?

Both of those names are Horde characters already on this server.

Thanks, Mopar.

And all I'll say to the other responder is the three words everyone can probably agree you live by: "Mom, More Hotpockets!"

Thanks again, it's been real!
