I can confirm this and practically all mobs with a backstab ability can use it from the front.

Yup. I also reported this roughly 2 weeks ago.

Aren't mobs supposed to be able to Backstab from anywhere?

I don't want to be harsh or anything, but someone specifically remembering something isn't a trustworthy proof :/.
Otherwise I could specifically remember being Backstabed while facing mobs on retail (which I don't, but you get the idea).

I would understand if the ability was called Stab, I checked the combat log and it's called Backstab and has the same animation and sound as the rogue ability.

It's bugged. They shouldn't be backstabbing from the front.

Yeah sure, I definitely agree with you, common sense suggests mobs shouldn't Backstab from the front. It's just that Blizzard didn't use common sense for everything, most notably mobs dodging from behind while players can't.
