Is grounding totem supposed to immune all spells until broke

So as a lock I cant put any DoTs, Fears, Banish etc. on any member of the Horde that's within 17 miles of the grounding totem. I know it's supposed to absorb / immune / eat a spell. But isn't it supposed to break after it eats one spell? Currently the grounding totem will stay up and constantly immune every spell that isnt a direct dmg spell or a melee hit. Is it supposed to be that way? Or is it supposed to go away after eating 1 of any spell?

Good morning,

Grounding totem worked in a funny way back then: it used to eat any dot effect you cast without breaking the totem, but a single direct spell _SHOULD_ destroy the totem instantly.

many warlocks use a macro that sends the pet to kill the totem, or simply use searing pain on any target under the effect of the totem to destroy it.

Okay so it is working as intended then? Unless I wand the totem, have pet kill it, or shoot it with shadow bolt / direct dmg spell, the 1 totem will continuously eat every single DoT, Fear, Curse, CC that I cast on any player on the Shamans team?

Ally Warlocks ftw, guess Will of the Forsaken wasn't enough.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it worked. I didn't have to chance to meet a shaman in world pvp yet so I can't vouch for the exact mechanics here, but on retail it did eat all effects without being destroyed (unless it was direct damage).

afaik, it got changed on some point (added internal cooldown? dismissed the totem?) can't really remember.

Why does it eat all non-direct damage or non-damage spells instead of 1 spell every 10 seconds?

Tooltip:
Summons a Grounding Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster that will redirect one harmful spell cast on a nearby party member to itself every 10 seconds. Will not redirect area of effect spells. Lasts 45 sec.
