There are great solutions out there like angos-zero's aowow that take almost no effort to set up. While I could understand that you might want to use something that you've build yourself, please consider using this in the mean time anyways, because it would make our lifes prepairing for launch (and after that) so much easier!

Although on a second thought, with no database for the server you're more likely to end up with substantional amount of people running around in shit gear with no idea where to get actually good items, and that would be a pretty good representation of blizzlike Vanilla WoW.

Well, how did Blizz block certain addons?

They didn't, most of the OP addons just didnt exist yet until much later into vanilla, such as grid frames, boss mods with visual timers and accurate threat meters.

However I seem to recall a later patch where they broke the decursive addon, which when installed your whole raid was able to auto-target dispel your whole raid. The addon would select a different target for every person spamming dispel with the mod installed.
