Filter chat of known gold farm sites.

by Mobi » Mon May 11, 2015 7:01 am

Every time a GM bans one, another one pops up. To me this seems like the only logical way to prevent it. My suggestion is to filter it from appearing to other users, similar to the way other servers have censored certain words (I wouldn't go as far as them, but gold selling sites seem reasonable to block). Ideally, I'd suggest making it so that the text goes threw on the client that sends it but no one else for best effectiveness.

Additionally, if you like this idea, you might want to per-emptively filter URL shorteners since that will likely be next route they take.

I think this is something they can technically do server sided, but it's probably best left to addons as their server sided solutions will always be a step or two behind since they can't magically be implemented instantly like an addon can do. I can't give you the name right now, but I'm sure someone around knows it. Spam is in the addon name.

I like the idea of the farmers' messages appearing for them, but being invisible for everyone else. As long as the filters are good, it could be a good way to deal with the problem. It may not be 100% effective and they may still find ways around it, but at least it's something.

hi,

this has been discussed internally already, but I will discuss this internally again to see what the best option is.
to block some chat yes or no, both choices have some advantages and disadvantages.
also properly configuring a block for certain sites can be a hassle since every word can be spelled in a thousand ways.

A simple way to deal with them, should be give a mute every time that "www.abcdefg etc..com" site pop up in chat (that is reinforced every time it happens every few close seconds), or even more rigidly, to ban everyone who try to type that site on chat (extreme case but legit).
The above suggestions could be very useful too.

yes,
that is why it is pretty hard to enforce it.
They will just change to w w w. a b c d. (om
or abcd.com
or @bcd

So that is the thing, you would need to make a huge list of possibility's and when that is done there are a lot of people will also be blocked, when the amount of items to block or to not display increases it automatically increases the false positives also.
I will put this on my discussion list :)

I don't know how much creative room you have on the server side, but a complex python script should be able to catch every permeation of a specific word. I also, don't know how much of a performance hit that would have on the server though. Which is why I said above, addons are probably the best solution in this situation.

Can you raise the level threshold needed to post in public channels from level 5 to 10?

That will at least slow down the time it takes to create a new spam toon.

Accounts here are free, so I have a feeling this will be more of a hindrance to real players than it will be for the spammers.

When I was new here, I was annoyed to no end that I couldn't chat until 5.
