Cone of cold effect replacing frostbolt effect.

Hi,

I don't' know if this is a bug, but there's a least a problem of consistency regarding the mage chill effects.

If a target is affected by Frostbolt and you cast Cone of Cold on him, it will remove the Frostbolt effect.
If a target is affected by Cone of Cold and you cast Frostbolt on him, the Frostbolt effect won't affect the target, even if it remains only 1 second of Cone of Cold effect.

Maybe it's a vanilla thing that better effects replaces and deny application of lower effects (CoC is 50% slow while Frostbolt is 40%), but the thing is : the other mage chill effects don't follow this rule. Ice Armor and Improved Blizzard can be applied on the same target, plus CoC or Frostbolt.

So, either CoC and Frostbolt should be able to affect the same target at the same time like the other chill effects, or no chill effect should be able to. Or there's a special rule for those 2 spells but mentioned nowhere.

Also, the chill effect adds additional slowing % and gets it's own debuff. Ice Armor also slows attack speed so it's not the same debuff.

This is intended I believe, because of the fact that frostbolt's snare is weaker than cone of cold so it cannot replace it.

Edit: I don't think blizzard/ice armor are categorized as the same type of snare as frostbolt/coc. Blizzard is a purely talented snare while Ice armor is a passive snare, and frostbolt/coc are both active snares.

Your way of categorizing spells is highly questionable. Since there's no "duplicate spells", you can find differences or similarities for each of them.

Anyway, never seen spells effect that remove others effects before, unless this is clearly stated in the tooltip like warlock curses.

This is normal behavior. The CoC is superior slow rebuff than frostbolt, so it will overwrite the former if present

Yes, this was correct on retail.

Why Blizzard doesn't overwrite CoC then ?

All of these snares should be overwriting each other. Nothing about the way that you get extra slowed from having more than one chill effect on your character is blizzard-like.

"Do snares stack?

-No, only one snare can be active on a target at a time, the snare that slows the target the most is the priority, which can create problems when a short powerful snare like the one attached to improved blizzard hits a target. It removes the snare you have on them and then it vanishes shortly afterwards. Attempting to apply a less powerful snare on target already more powerfully snared fails. However Ice/frost armor snares don't operate on the same scale as they also slow attack speed. So you can have the ice armor snare on a target and any other frost snare, its just the movement reduction doesn't stack."

It was never about extra slowing your target, it was about to apply several snares, the target being slowed at the value of the most efficient one. ie exactly how it works in WOTLK, don't know about BC. But yeah okay, it doesn't work that way in Vanilla.

Thanks for the good reply. So the Blizzard snare effect is not working Vanilla-Blizz-like a the moment.

If you read the comments in the thread, someone has mentioned that the debuffs should stack the slow and they should not. During the last time I played PvP against a mage a few weeks ago, I was getting extra slowed by multiple snares.

Not a direct effect snare.
