Server (over)load system and nostal-database

by lvkuang » Mon Jul 27, 2015 6:24 am

First, as usual, thanks a lot for making this vanilla server possible for everyone in the world!
I have 3 suggestions.
1. There can be a server load system. It shows the optimal load for server's hardware, as well as the maximum load for it. For example 6000 would be optimal load for now and 10000 would be maximum. This way we can anticipate the lag. Also making people more aware that they need to donate to get better hardware instead of complaining about it. which bring us to the second suggestion.
2. implement donation progression system. wikipedia does this once every year there is no reason for us not to have it. set a goal for raising money for new hardware/maintenance quarterly or semi-annually. collect money til that goal is met and pause the progression system til next time. this way not only we will know how expensive it is to maintain the best private server, we can also know exactly where did our money go to.
3. we should have a database system like thottbot or wowhead. because the items on this server is different from some other versions making it really hard to find information about them online. i remember thottbot used to have an addon that tracks drops and quests and stuff, we should be able to do that too with this many people online all the time.
thanks again for the great work!

Good luck lol people have been asking about the status of the donations, what's been purchased, how much has been raised, and how much more is needed since donations first opened up here. As far as I know it has always been a question that gets ignored until the thread is buried. Would be great to have some transparency. Someone was even posting daily threads on this very topic recently.

I actually made a post two days before this one about exactly this

We would really like to see where our donation money is going especially if its going to improving the horendous lag issues the sever currently has.

sigh, naive me thought i could make a good suggestion, i guess there is a reason why they dont want transparency, that they dont want people to find out how much donations they are getting. after all this is a private server, i am getting my hopes way too high

I thought about this too but even so they dont really have to disclose how much their getting. They just ahve to show how much of it their putting towards servers. I dont really think players expect the team to be these self-sacrificing saints that want nothing than to give all their free time to the server. They have lives too.

On the flip side, if they are recieving bucketloads of donation money and using none of it to improve the server then a special level of hell should open up for them. But thats ludicrous.... rite..?

I dunno if I can agree. A donation is a donation. There is nothing about donations that say what it has to be used for. If they choose to use it for themselves then that is still acceptable use of donation money.

This is copied directly from the announcement of donations opening up. Source found below.

"New hardware is needed to suppress the lag and set a new world record. The cost of this hardware cannot be handled by our team alone, therefore a donation system will be available for a limited time (and limited cost) here. This donation will not be mandatory, nor give any reward: No hall of fame, no items in-game, it will only help us support the upkeep cost. A status of the donation will be available on the website."
