This is a RPG; you create a character, you level and develop that character and you spend lots of time and dedication playing it. Changing race and whatnot when the character has already been developed is basically as anti-RPG you can get and is among all the "comfortable" additions by Blizzard that ruined the game.
1) Vanilla isn't perfect
2) Get off your god damn high horse
3) No one is asking for free anything
4) I've heard a lot of reasons why this shouldn't be implemented, but quite frankly your argument on the basis of being true to an RPG is the biggest load of steaming horse shit I have ever read. There are HUNDREDS of RPGs that allow character customization after the initial recreation. Furthermore there are plenty of lore justifications on why your character might be able change.
- Hair Change/Barbershop is the most obvious, if you need an explanation go read the wikipedia article on what "hair" is
- Name Change, see Hair Change/Barbershop
- Race Change, quite simply...magic. There are dozens of quests in game where you are turned into another race or have your appearance altered. While these are temporary for in game purposes, there is no reason why magic users couldn't make the change permanent. The best example are the Dragons who are able to change their appearance without any difficulty. The easiest lore example would be a Human becoming a Forsaken or even reversed (see the quest The Lich, Ras Frostwhisper).
- Physical and biological change i.e. Character Recustomization, see Race Change
- Faction Change, for balance reasons I feel this would be the hardest to implement, not to mention all the coding required to make a smooth change without simply copy and pasting items/gold. I would personally just stop at Race Change, as a Faction Change in Vanilla just doesn't sit well.
Furthermore while Blizzard has certainly gone to far with certain changes (namely LFD/LFR and the overall lowering of the game's difficulty), you would be to dumb, deaf, blind, and severely mentally deficient to believe none of their changes improved the experience of the game (making all class specs viable, dual spec, turning pets/mounts into spells, and a GREATLY improved user interface and customization).
If someone wants to be part of a "true" RPG they can just not change their race, no one is holding a gun to their head forcing them to do it. If it doesn't affect you, why should you give a shit?
