They have DDoS protection. Blizzard hardware was ten years old, it'd be worse.

All I know is I think OP's idea is a good one if it could boost the server homeostasis in any way. If not applicable to security, then surely something else? Dealing with the devil it may be but a few minor untraditional cosmetics > indefinitely downed server. Also, I'm shallow enough to donate just for minor cosmetics so it's clear what side I'm on.

What a great idea, teekanc. You're the first person to come up with the concept of donating to this server in exchange for minor perks like cosmetics changes, name changes, faction changes, etc. Truly no one has ever devised such a idea nor tried to pitch it to the staff.
