A lot of interesting replies, but all of them missing the point.
The question is, what would be better, the x1 rate or an x2 rate? Or even x3?
No one wants a x12 rate or some such. We all want to enjoy this huge world, and not just rush through it; otherwise we could just play the retail version.
But do we really want x1 rate? There were lots and lots of grindy stretches in the original Vanilla WoW. No one misses those. The game should be fun. You should be able to do all the fun quests and skip all the grinding bits.
The x2 rate would accomplish exactly that.
Yes, there are 5000 players around right now; but chances are that those numbers will be dwindling soon when people reach lvl 30 or 40 and find themselves in a stretch in which they dislike the dungeons and the areas and don't have any fun anymore.

Ah, so now you are the spokesperson for the entire world?

Then blizzlike vanilla is not the right game for you. My advice would be to go play somewhere else.

You misunderstood the part about the boring stretches.

I did not mean that they are the same for everyone. But each player has his favourite areas, and has a some he really doesn't like. X2 would allow players to spend their time only in the areas and dungeons they like. With X1, you must either do some grinding or spend some time in areas where you don't really want to be.

The ultimate question is, what is best for the server? And as I said - lots and lots of players starting toons and then leaving somewhere in the 30s or 40s - that can't be a good thing.

X1 should not be a foregone conclusion. We are all on the same page that x5 or x10 or insta-60 are out of the question, but X2 seems very reasonable.

I should probably note that you get much more experience than you did in retail. The database was forked from a 3.x project. Therefore, most quests give better rewards than they should do.

I don't think we'd have the population that we already do if people disliked the leveling rates. As far as questing is concerned, I'm like 3 levels above my leveling guide addon. There's dungeons there too that you could use for xp.

BTW I don't see many people leaving somewhere in the 30s or 40s. You have proof for that? No.
