I could ask, is that really what you want? But that's something you'll have to ask yourself, if you want to understand your life better.
When I play a game I don't want it to be like real life. I want it to be like a more open book. It shouldn't be like modern FPS rollercoaster campaigns, where you beeline your way through missions, but it shouldn't be like Day Z either.
If there aren't enough bounderies, I start to despise the game.
Take a clear comparison from Gothic 2 to Skyrim. Though Skyrim is a an awesome game the sidetracking was too much for me at times. The main campaign unfortunately lacked really immersion whereas Gothic 2 carried you through the chapters 1-6. You were a weakling first and then you became a dragonslayer, all in a well thoughtout manner. You rarely had the feeling of getting beelined through the chapers; maybe the last one. My point is you could do much, but couldn't do too much.
That's why I don't like Minecraft either. It's just TOO much freedom for my taste of playing. The perfect medium is really hard to accomplish but I think WoW vanilla had a reasonable balance between beelining and limitless possibilities.
Edit: The paragraph about the diversity: It's about diversity among players. Player A is a diehard raider. Therefore he's min/maxed for raiding. Now he has raid times twice a week which is sufficient for a raider who knows what he's doing. Once Ony, once MC. Now he will raid Wednesday and Saturday. He will respec twice a week back and forth and still be at 40g if its 10g a respecc. Now most characters will specc from raid PvE, to farm PvE or PvP specc. Everybody will run the same specc.
Whereas now the PvPer will always have an edge about the PvEer because the PvEer has to heavily consider whether to respec or rather stay with this build and take some PvP disadvantages.
Diversity among player base is given.
Diversity for the single player is not given.
I choose to have the former diversity.
My character shouldn't be a one army. He should only be a hero, a tiny person in the entire world. Not the way it's in retail where one hybrid character is all: DD, FC, Healer. All done in seconds switching dualspecc.
