The issue with rollbacks and huge lag spikes

by cdlbc3 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 4:22 pm

I think its safe to say that the entire community loves this server very much, but putting up with these rollbacks is and spikes is pretty annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had an epic rollback against them....

So to cut to the chase, what can we as a community do to help subside the situation of daily lag spikes and rollbacks? I'll be fair here...there are quite a few of us playing just to play for BC when it comes out and when arena's come out, that's going to be one very very annoying issue (not to mention that it already is for a lot of raiders and people in general)

Is it a matter of server bandwidth? Will increased donations be able to help with this issue or do you guys not plan to increase the bandwidth even with donations?

I've been wondering the same thing. The development team is doing an awesome job adding content and keeping bugs at a minimum.

The latency is an understandable issue since the servers are in Europe. However, can donations be used to purchase a better server and result in better gameplay?

they should post a call for donation
requested amount will be gathered in few minutes cuz everyone tired of this shit delay

or make que
or at least some system to drop players after afking more than 10 minutes, lots of afkers wasting recources

Blizzard has essentially been leaving private servers alone for quite a while now, but they've forced Twitch to suspend users who stream Nostalrius. It's also a known fact that Blizzard tends to go after servers who earns money from Blizzard's content, since Nostalrius is free. I highly doubt they'll interfere, as long it stays that way.

I think it's okay to take donations as long as the people in charge don't take any of the money as profit. They can use the money for server upkeep and whatnot.

I'll rather have some lag in Nostalrius for a while, than no Nostalrius at all. In the event that Blizzard makes a case and wins it, all the software will be deleted and/or confiscated by Blizzard. Meaning no more server anywhere on the Internet that can hold 7000 people at once.

P.S: If Nostalrius were to release all the software during the court case and/or after, Blizzard would sue everyone involved in the project for millions and releasing it would be against the law.

Pretty sure you're wrong at this point since Blizzard hasn't taken down the open source emulators out there that directly go against their Terms.

https://github.com/cmangos/mangos-wotlk
https://github.com/cmangos/mangos-tbc
https://github.com/cmangos/mangos-cata

The emulator would be taken down from github if Blizzard had any right to take it down. The source is out there. Just because Nostalrius is basically making it proprietary doesn't mean they're special.

Someone can simply edit the login server to make a better batch process of logging players in and modify the world variables that Nostalrius edited to reduce lag (player/mob render distance for example).

You misunderstood completely. I never said Blizzard would go after the publicly released version of Nostalrius, nor the basic default server that anyone can get, nor anyone who tries to improve on it. I said that if Blizzard were to open a court case against Nostalrius to shut it down. If the court case opens, then the case is essentially won by Blizzard by default due to past decisions in court. It might take months, even years but the end result is still the same.

While the court case is open, it would be illegal for Nostalrius to release their server data to the public. If they did release it, Blizzard would sue the hell out of everyone involved in the Nostalrius project, not to mention law itself would go after them for releasing the data. Blizzard wouldn't try to shut down the released data because it would already be out there. But if Blizzard wins, all the server data is confiscated and lost. Of course anyone can re-do the years of work that Nostalrius did and make a 7000 population server again, but why risk sending a server and community down the drain for a few donations.

Therefore, it's better to keep the server free. So that Nostalrius doesn't earn any money from content owned by Blizzard, so that Blizzard doesn't try to shut it down.
