 Hallo
I am aware are that the safety accounts is the players own concern.
But atm im in a situation where i have a strong antivirus (bullguard) I make sure not to download any bad files (Keylockers fx) and i have kept the password of my account to my self, not share it with NO one! But today my biggest scare became real! I lost my account! some one got access to it! I have been told by a GM that it is a IP from a country far away from my own. There is no way i can recover my stole account and i have tried to talk to different GM's to try and find a solution sadly with no luck. I know im not the first one to run into this problem so my suggestion is this:

Find a way to show your players that you care about them and wants to help them when they loose something they have invested alot of time in.
Ex, if a GM is contacted by a player that can prove that his account has been hacked by showing that the IP useing the account is not his own and is far away from his, or can show that he can log into a guild webpage with the same char/account name, the GM can reduce the password reset counter to 24hours instead of 10days OR can temp ban the account for 10 days so the player doesnt loose his gold and gear.

I hope that you will listen to this suggestion and will start to help those of us that have been struck by bad luck and have lost our highly loved chars! Im begging for understanding from the GM's and you can see that there is a way that you can help players without compromising your politics

Thank you for reading and understanding
Cheer, a sad sad guy!

That would certainly put Nostalrius among the ranks of every other WoW server (private and retail), considering they all offer account recovery support.

Don't take my post as trolling, but rather just pointing out flaws. First off, I have a suggestion in my signature that creates a second method of authentication on https://en.nostalrius.org/login and removes .account password in-game. This is beneficial for the people who use the same username and password across multiple websites because not all websites offer another password or key to their login pages. Removing .account password in-game disallows stolen accounts to have their passwords changed in-game and only through https://en.nostalrius.org/login

Anyway, here's some flaws with your suggestions.

  • Showing the IP of the person that isn't the account creator
People use VPNs to access Nostalrius. They have their own reasons to do this and it is acceptable behavior on Nostalrius according to the staff in previous posts. The IP should be the last resort to prove the account has been stolen because this can allow people to sell accounts if they claim a VPN was used. Another form of the account creator being authentic needs to be shown.

  • Guild webpage
A third-party service is not the way to go. This is one step above using an IP, but Nostalrius may not want to cooperate with over 100 guilds on the server just to prove a few people being innocent.

  • Reducing the password reset time to 24 hours instead of 10 days
I do agree with this, but only if my suggestion is approved. Someone other than the account creator can still login and change the password in-game if they have the IP still. This is done by using .account password (in-game).

  • Temporary ban the account for 10 days
That would be a catch 22. In the event that a player has another player's account name, that player can request another player's suspension for 10 days just out of hatred and claim that the account was stolen. Damage can be done with just 1 macro though so it can take a minimum of 2 minutes to destroy all items in the inventory, equipped, and bank with 1 macro.

This is a serious problem that I hope will be resolved someday soon, I love nost but feel very unsecured knowing this could happen to me any day even with the precautions I take.

As Aunstic said, some of your proposed solutions may not be the best, but this doesn't mean the root problem does not exsist.
