With so many people getting banned for stupid stuff, can we erase their accounts or at least make the names available after a certain time window? Would be great.

It sort of falls into the category of why they will never offer name changes even for $$$. Even though it's a new character, that name still existed in Nostalrius and it could be used to scam / abuse trust of others.

On top of that, wrongful bans would be far more punishing if accounts are wiped just so others can snipe names.

Tbh, this is the main point and I really hadn't thought that deep into it. Mainly because it didn't work that way on retail. I guess one server and small population compared to all of retail makes for a close community.

It's to prevent scumbaggery such as selling names. You know, what you tried to do earlier?

I recall a GM saying they do not delete or free up character names that have been banned for review purposes. My guess is they probably want to keep the character info handy in case of an appeal or something.

Blame scammers and launderers. They were selling names in an effort to conceal illegal activities against the Terms of Use.

Step 1) Make 20+ accounts using a vpn
Step 2) Find list of most popular names in MMORPGs
Step 3) Fill all 200+ character slots with said popular names
Step 4) Sell names for exorbitant prices to people who genuinely care about said names
Step 5) Repeat steps 1-4 for maximum douchebaggery
