No Idea What the New Announcement Means but...

I really hope the new announcement doesn't equate to some form of fast travel.

The world that exists and that we play in has a very delicate balance that makes it feel like a somewhat tangible online world. Traveling takes time. You have to pass through certain zones. You have to wait for zeppelins, find a mage to port you, wait for an hour on your hearthstone, or take a long flight path. It makes the world feel as large as it is.

It also creates a scenario where world pvp occurs. Now some people are going to hear world pvp and they're immediately going to think: ganking. Ganking does not equate to world pvp. World PVP can be a mutual dive into combat to test skills and get the better of one another. These battles can escalate, and create stories that we tell our friends when we're not playing. World PVP, better than any other PVP utilizes the landscape the original game designers made, and creates interesting situations that can't happen anywhere else. There is a whole body language that you exhibit with your character when you travel through the world. This body language is created by the tension felt between two players that can't communicate, but who are able to kill each other. This is something insanely unique and interesting and to be basic...fun.

The retail game has multiple modes of fast travel. Each time these modes have been introduced it has taken player traffic from the world and put it more and more into capitol cities. These capitol cities become humongous hubs that nobody every needs to leave. This dissipates the life that currently exists in the world that you travel in. Many zones in retail World of Warcraft are indeed ghost towns because of this. If you want a good example of what it's like to play in an empty zone that very few people are traveling through, then a good experiment is to check out the server Kronos. Great server, but tiny tiny population. I can't get over the sense of loneliness I feel playing there.

Devs.. You have such a great thing going here. Contrary to what a lot of haters say...Nostalrius is awesome. I'm having more fun here than I did when I actually played Vanilla, and that's largely due to the massive population, and how they all fill the world. When I used to play the game I had to get lucky in order to see other people out in the world. But I can practically go to any zone and see players! This is amazing!

I would adjure you to think about the impacts of adding a fast travel system. It really lowers the traffic through zones, and depreciates the overall feel and liveliness of the server. Again, I have no idea if you're actually thinking about adding fast travel or not. But please don't. It could have dire impacts on the balance of something that's really special, but hard to put your finger on.

If you don't know what the announcement means, why not wait until they reveal more details instead of posting an essay on "why fast travel is bad".

That's a lot of words. With a good point. But rather pointless right now. Thanks anyways.

I just think it's important, so I made a post. Sorry if you didn't like the timing! Obviously didn't rail against Nostalrius or say anything negative, but I tried to make my "suggestion" as well as I could that they not add fast travel in any form to the game.

You didn't have to read it. (Edit* though I appreciate it if you did) But now if they ever add fast travel we have a post where we can discuss it's merits or failures. hah...
