Add additional gold sinks into the game

by Mopar » Sun Nov 01, 2015 7:17 am

Higher-than-retail server population creates a lot of currency entering the system every day, but the gold sinks are tuned for a much lower population.

The suggestion here is to add additional gold sinks, where players can purchase in-game things that do not affect game play with in-game gold. The idea is to take gold out of the economy, which should help balance it. These purchasable items could be things that are typically items you get for donating on other servers.

Yes I know that this would require more GM time (a resource we are short of). It probably has to be managed semi-manually. But the benefit would be a better balanced economy and it might be worth it as an alternative to putting patches in that break the Blizzlike nature of parts of the game (e.g. DM North tribute.)

If I got you right:

You are suggesting ingame NPC vendor with vanity stuff sold for gold?

To be honest I haven't noticed how it negatevily affects the server, could you explain?

I'd rather let things to go as they go

Things are worth what ppl pay. That's how free market works. It's not a problem per se. Capitalism sucks but we better not get all political.

I think any idea that requires any custom modification to the game outside your own client looks (aka that Improved Models addon etc etc) won't pass.

I don't think this is necessarily bad idea, I just think it's gonna get "no" from staff for a very valid reason - was not in game before.

You can also tell that there wasn't more than 2,5k people in game too but that is really bad excuse. I'm enjoying this population despite some things which come with it. Gankfests, harder to find ores/herbs etc etc...

I'm suggesting something that is like a donation page, except that you donate with gold (not real money). It would have to be done manually most likely. Which is why I expect a 'no' answer, but I thought I'd throw it out there as it creates another economic control that Nost could potentially use.

There's a lot of non-blizzlike things on this server, so I don't think that's an issue.

@Simonich - price of black lotus (and therefore flasks), and any dragon finger of (healing|wrath) are good examples. Way beyond what they should be, and that's because of both the high demand / low supply, PLUS the amount of gold in the system (some set of people can in fact pay that, which supports the pricing.)

@Lefeu - yes exactly. The point of this is to reduce what people are willing to pay. That's what removing currency from an economic system does, and it's exactly the reason Blizzard put sinks into the game in the first place - so that as the server matured, there would not be unbound inflation.

So generally, we don't really want to reduce the population, and the intent of this idea is to provide a way to help compensate for that population without reducing it.

one thing i really "hate".
That one is when people say "There's a lot of non-blizzlike things on yadda yadda can we add this one more".

Please dont take offense on this one, but can you at least try to understand how much effort is needed to get even remotely close to simulate something which happened 10 years ago? I'm sure you can.
If we already have so many (pls name me those, i haven't noticed any immersion breaking stuff so far), why on the earth would we want more?
There will always be stuff which are not the same, you can't perfectly copy/paste anything.
Nostalrius is closest realm to get you that x1 vanilla vibe and "there is alot non-blizzlike things" statement is really out of place here.

If there is way to fix the problem, it would be increasing the spawn rates or simply adding more herb/ore nodes into the world. Second one seems by far more blizzlike. I guess it would be barely noticed at all, due to this GIGANTIC population.

That would, however, only fix the problem of some prices. Gold sink would still be lacking and it would need some "custom approach".
I wouldn't have anything against ingame vendor that sells stuff for gold, because it would stress down the GM team on the longer run.
But that's not how things were back than so I'm expecting a valid "no" here.

I think staff have enough on work on their hands already managing two servers. Plus, I've seen a thread like this before, and I think it was locked.

@Odomiah - don't take my non-blizzlike comment out of context. What I'm suggesting is that a better non-blizzlike solution to non-blizzlike high population is to add non-blizzlike gold sinks rather than non-blizzlike tuning to DM North. Essentially I think it's better to have a gold sink that does not affect gameplay than a solution by changing the way an instance works.

And yes i do know what it takes to get close to Blizzlike, as I've set up several MaNGOS servers myself, both on a local VM and in the AWS cloud.

Note that increasing herb/node spawns doesn't fix the problem. It puts a band-aid on the herb price issue, but doesn't address the greater economic problem, which is a result of high population. So for example, prices of Dragon Finger of Healing will just keep rising unchecked.

@BoxerBriefly - that is the real issue with this idea, that it requires additonal staff time. But the thread you saw was talking about donation rewards most likely, as in money donations. This has a completely different purpose.

Adding a "gold purchase" page on site is easy, but transactions would take time to get done, manually.
If they can get over adding ingame npc with such purpose that'd put some work of their shoulders.

Manually doing each transaction via website - too much work for free.
Ingame npc - wasn't there in game.

Even tough I'm aware of what and why are you suggesting, I still don't see this getting "yes" as answer.
