Tauntable Rag and BWL questions?

by Tommy Maze » Thu Apr 09, 2015 7:00 am

Hi GM/Dev's of Nostalrius,

I am currently thinking that Rag able to be taunted is kind of a bug. Curiously enough I remember him to aggro on a target close target, but also have a threat or aggro table of some kind. Granted I played a DPS warrior at age 15 when I was doing it, but I do remember having to get out of melee range during a blast and running in quickly as he re-engaged after an explosion with the quote "By fire be purged" I believe the current standard of Taunt/shield wall rotations guilds have been using for Rag is not correct and I am curious to know how BWL will look if this remains in the game.

Blackwing lair had several bosses in Vanilla or pre-BC that had guild stoppers or gear checks/skill checks. Now most of us who have done this version remember the strats so it will not be as blizzlike as possible as thirty to forty people who have done this all before come flying through the gate and take on Razergore and do it flawlessly. Will there be bugs or unblizz like events - like tauntable rag in BWL? Are you planning to make BWL challenging with scaled or increased values to make it more challenging for people who have already seen the content so it feels like we may be stuck on Valestraz?

In my time in WoW I remember Valestraz being one of those boss fights that some guilds even if they did kill him, would be a challenge for weeks afterwards. Even so much as calling him a guild destroyer? Will This be the case or is there some planning for this

Glad you have such vivid memories, but please provide a source.

Vael, like so many other bosses, was difficult because people didn't know how to play the game. DPS in retail came nowhere near the numbers hardcore guilds on Nos deliver. Consequently, tanks in retail never learned to build threat as well as tanks in Nos guilds to, because they never needed to. Vael, being a fight where both dps and tanking need to be above-average, was difficult for retail players.

I'm no developer, but I can promise you there will not be a tauntable rag in BWL.

I'm terrified to say why vaelastrasz was known as the guild destroyer because I do not want that mechanic back in.

Don't rely on memories after 10 years...
Ragnaros was tauntable, but has a special behavior with targets that are not in melee.

I am too lazy to look for them again and give the link, but there are videos from vanilla showing that Ragnaros was tauntable. The reason why you need to get out of melee from time to time is because he casts Ragnaros wrath every ~25 sec and it will knock back any player at close range (thus taking lava damages, thus loosing ~15-20 seconds to come back).

If you think it is wrong, then first bring evidences, and then only say there is a bug. ;)

http://www.wowhead.com/spell=20566/wrath-of-ragnaros#used-by-npc Wrath of Ragnaros. wowhead shows the wrong damage, should only be 1k damage roughly before resists.

WoW Icon 16x16 Patch 1.8.0 (10-Oct-2005):
There is no longer a one-hour time restriction on the Vaelastraz the Corrupt encounter in Blackwing Lair.

so you had basically one try per week in BWL retail :))) maybe nost can implement aswell :)) )???

As someone else already pointed out. Vanilla content was hard because people in general had no clue what they were doing, knew nothing about BiS gearing for their class nor the optimal specs. Regarding tank threat, tanks would be using all mannor of shitty tank weapons like Quel'Serrar, Spineshatter etc not knowing just how much TPS they could gain by using a very fast dagger such as Finkles skinner,, Scarlet kris, Alcors. People of most classes raiding D1 set instead of BiS pieces, warriors raiding as arms. The list goes on.

TLDR: The great majority knew nothing about the game and how to play it. The few that actually had a clue would be the ones that killed Cthun and that progressed thru Naxx, which wasnt a whole lot.

I'm quite sure that even in mid 2005 he was tauntable.
