I believe the reason is entirely different. On first days people made groups to increase a chance of tagging a mob and getting a kill towards a quest. They also spread out a bit to cover larger area again to increase a chance of tagging a freshly re-spawned mob.
I'm pretty sure the loot stayed default group loot in 99% of cases, which resulted in players not being near the mob to loot it after it was killed, which resulted in a loot staying in a corpse, which resulted in upset skinner, who came to the wrong conclusions.
When I realized, that I won't be getting any herbs, I also came to conclusion, that skinning is a profession, that actually benefits from crowded areas. I believe OP was skinning quest beasts, which, probably, means those beasts were killed by a group.
Tanking is all about heavy steel and harsh language.
