Logging out alive and logging in dead

I logged out alive in a horde town. When I logged back in and hour later, I was dead. Has anyone else had this problem?

Did you wait out the full 20 sec when exiting the game or did you press "exit now"? When my brother closed the game via the "exit now" button his character would just sit down and remain in the game for some time.
