Unfortunately, this is exactly what was promised and it lured plenty of established guilds to this server over a certain other. So either you're saying the devs lied about that or, more likely, that they've been overwhelmed by other things. But communication is so poor no one really knows what's going on anymore and end up speculating like the OP.

Personally, I wouldn't care if people bought gold and it funded the server.

I don't care if they do, as many others have said. There were always some percentage of people getting away with it on WoW back in the day so... doesn't change the experience for me lol. That is, as long as they keep it at least down to a certain minimum amount.
