Connectivity

by Ilumini » Sat Feb 28, 2015 6:46 pm

Well, I can confirm the following:

This login issue is not due to a DDoS, firewall, or any other network related issue. I've setup a private VPN on my OVH server and tunneled a connection while trying to login to the server.

In other words, this method allows me to bypass OVH's firewall and keeps all traffic internalized. OVH's firewall protection does not filter internal traffic. That being said, it is not a firewall issue and the server is not being DDoS'd. This also rules out the theory that the OVH protection is interpreting this massive flow of user traffic as a false positive DDoS, which is a good thing.

However, I am guessing there is SOME sort of network prioritization going on in regards to the internal traffic. I am able to get the realm selection screen ALOT more often than not now with this tunneled connection.

Figure I post this to give whatever player-side update I could for the community. Cheers

Alright, update. So I did get in after about 5 tries. To test a theory, I disconnected, tried logging in about 6-7 more times. And I got in again. I guess the prioritization of internalized traffic does make quite the bit of difference..

In other words, it seems like I found a way to get in, atleast somewhat successfully rather than not successfully at all. I don't really recommend this method to anyone though. I'm not really sure if this is against Nos's TOS or FUP, or if they even have such a thing. This is considered using a proxy and this DOES bypass their protection. So again, I don't recommend it. I don't think I'll play this way until it's fixed legitly, unless i get an okay from a staff member otherwise.

Update 2:

There is definitely network prioritization for internal traffic. I've turn the VPN off, tried logging in 10 times but never get passed "Connecting". With the VPN on, I was able to get to the realm selection screen 4 times and successfully log in 1 time.

What does it prioritize then? Certain regions? A lot of Swedes seem to have been able to connect (don't know if they're lucky).

Update 3:

Well, after extensively searching the website and forum, I do not see any rules or TOS in place against using proxies to connect to the server. This being said, I tested with 2 of my friends. I had them both connect to the same VPN I'm connected to, and voila, they are able to successfully connect after 7-12 login attempts. This is putting a bandaid on the wound rather than healing it fully, but hey, it works. I do wish there was a way I could mass-provide this to everyone. I'll brainstorm on some ideas.

No. Since I'm tunneling from an OVH server myself, my traffic is being treated as internal traffic. Private traffic. Traffic originating within the OVH network. This allows my login and traffic to bypass OVH's filtering and move up on the chain in prioritization.

What does OVH mean?

Also, this seems completely logical. How else would the GM's/admins be able to connect?

OVH is a French ISP

Well, I'm sure there is a configuration, probably sort of an exclusive whitelist, that the GM's can configure on their side to ALWAYS make sure they can login, without using the method I'm using. OVH is the server and protection provider that NOS is using.
