Concerning Staff Communication and Transparency

by Knetik » Sat Aug 29, 2015 3:40 pm

I would first like to preface, that I really do love this server, and I will continue to support it, but there are some red flags that are popping up that remind a lot of us of a private server of old...

One of the biggest irritations of any gaming project, regardless of what it is, is a lack of communication. At release the communication was great between the Nost staff and the playerbase, but as of late it has died down to almost nonexistent.

One HUGE topic going on right now is the PvE server release. I by no means am wanting to roll on it myself, though I do see the possible need for it for various reasons (ie. lag, delay, overpopulation, pve playerbase). As I scan through the 100+ pages of responses to the topic in the Announcements forum, I notice one HUGE problem. There has been no communication to the playerbase, and it is causing anger and frustration.

This isn't the first issue. There are some bugs that haven't even been addressed when brought up on multiple occasions. Huge lag issues pop up and we don't hear anything at all expect rumors and guesses from the playerbase.

My proposal is that the staff simply responds, even briefly and with lack information, to the playerbase on HUGE issues.

An example, concerning the PvE server possible release:

We are still discussing the possibility of a PvE server release under the Nostalrius brand. Expect a new update next week.

This simple act of taking 30 seconds to respond to the community would ease a lot of tension amongst that group of people.

For most, the irritation doesn't come from not getting their way (mostly), but it comes from being in the dark of what is going on. I realize this is a free project, and I, and may others are immensely grateful for it. The staff doesn't owe the playerbase anything, but to better this project over any server to date, please communicate to the playerbase. Ghostcrawler was hated and loved by many during his time at Blizzard, but he added so much to the company when he created an open line of communication between the staff and the players.

It's a classic issue with "free" servers for any game. It's why I've moved on to a paying game - which I would suggest you do as well if zero comm is affecting your play experience.

The project is fairly good however, but the fact that I can sit on a ticket for say, my same faction attempting to pull the Defias Messenger (yeah, low level stuff from when I first started but a valid point)...so that he respawns and they can tag him for themselves, or when a 60 same faction lock can sit on a boss spawn point and tag the area for a few hours at a time - or when a rogue can sit in the inn in Redridge and literally camp the entrance killing the same players over and over again...and hours can pass by with zero response from a GM...

And the fact they let this server get so overpopulated with no consideration for a relief server...not to mention the blatant toxicity of the majority of the "types in general chat" playerbase...and have well demonstrated they are overwhelmed by the largest single server in the history of this game..live or otherwise...well...

Time to move on.

I posted a while back in the suggestions forum that they communicate a little more in some form or another, even if it's just a 'we're still looking into it'.

The answer from the community was that they'd prefer the devs to concentrate on whatever it is they're doing and not waste time posting. I assumed Syrah was the answer to both sides, but if he's not given any new updates there's not much he can do.

We're back to square one in terms of communications being in the toilet and the playerbase getting frustrated. Expect plenty more qq in the future as those who initially crapped on the better communication idea suddenly find they're now frozen out when they want answers.

It's not just the PvE server, it's just in general, the staff are very, very quiet. We get little or no communication from them.

Like when they decided to stealth break DM North farming, they said nothing. Players posted tons of threads about it, they still said nothing. Another stealth hotfix was applied, and they STILL said nothing. It's like...jesus fuck, SAY SOMETHING, admins! Don't just make these big changes without notifying anyone!
