We need a longterm solution to overpopulation lag

by Etrigan » Sat Jan 09, 2016 3:57 pm

Recently Nostalrius implemented a performance patch that helped reduce some of the lag that occured during peak hours (China + EU), around 2-6 ST. This fix largely worked, but what wasn't mentioned in the patch notes is that this lag reduction came at the cost of greatly reduced view distance in raid instances and battlegrounds. This is why Firemaw doesn't move until you mind vision him down now, and why when you're standing in the middle of Warsong Gulch you can't see a flag carrier on the sides of the map. Anyone playing Warsong right now for the BG weekend can tell you what an exercise in frustration it is constantly spamming /target to find an EFC, and having people load at <100 yds such that you can't properly scout the enemy team's movement.

Today there was almost 12k people online, and the lag is back. Just as before, this lag will first crop up on the weekends, when there are the most people online, and just as before it will become an everyday occurence as the server's population continues to grow. We need to tell Nost's development team that sacrificing gameplay quality with these view distance reductions is not a welcome or even viable longterm solution, and that something much more direct needs to be done.

Freezing the creation of new accounts, region locking, population caps -- whatever solution Nost decides on we need it soon. Give us back our view distance.

Just make a Chinese server and be done with it.

What makes this server yours? The chinese have as much right to play on here as you do.

Because its an english speaking server and there is a strict rule to only speak english in main chat channels.

Make a chinese server where the same rules apply but only speaking chinese.

Except they're kind of.... sort of... breaking the ToU by not speaking english in public chats, not being a part of the community. Getting insane lags duo to some people that dont even wanna be a part of the community is what makes people frustrated.

I just think making another PvP server is such an easy and OK solution... Make transfers free and try to get a bunch of guilds over to it. Maybe even lock character creation on main server for a month so new people go to the second server. We can do another donation to get enough money for the server, even some people on this forum said they can help a lot with funds if Nost is willing to make another PvP server.

In order to support more servers, they need more hardware as well. It's not "just" to make a new server.

There's no ToU on speaking any certain language in chat of any kind. There is however a ToU rule on racism which so many players forget about.

And I'm not sure I follow your logic on chinese players not wanting to be a part of the community, they are a very large part of the community, whether you like it or not.

There has always been lag on Nostalrius, blaming it on one particular race is fucking silly. How about you blame the admins of the server instead for not putting a cap on the population?
oh, ok.

Theres a difference between being racist and then being frustrated towards a HUGE amount of players that suddenly joins the server who CANNOT speak English which makes the server lag for everyone, atleast the very majority of them cant speak any english at all and therefore not being able to communicate with the rest of the server. Even retail wow made chinese servers due to this. its ruining ppls experience by not being able to communicate with ppl in a "team based game".

Im not sure if ur chinese urself but nobody actually have anything against the chinese ppl its just that we cant communicate with them, dont be so defensive about this because IT IS a problem.
Even if it was lots of ppl from the US that joined the server there'd be a huge deal about it too and something had to be done about it

I'm not chinese, I just find it funny how everyone is suddenly talking about the absolute need to communicate with everyone on a server. I communicate with a very small percentage of players on the server, usually only within my own guild. Does that mean that I don't deserve to play on the server because I don't want to go around and befriend everyone that crosses my path?

I've had no problems with communicating with the chinese I have come across, the simple solution is google translate if their english isn't good enough for a simple conversation. I'm not sure what everyone is doing in the game to force advanced communications between them and chinese players, but I'm assuming they are mainly using the "communications issue" as a guise for pointing fingers.
oh, ok.
