Leatherworking worthwhile?

by Shadowlurk » Sat Feb 14, 2015 2:25 am

I will be rolling a rogue and want to know if going Skinning/Leatherworking can be effective even at end-game.

Thanks.

Farming devilsaur leather and making the gear and selling it on the AH is a decent way to make some gold, so i'd say yes. It also provides you with some pre-raid BiS gear.

The most smooth thing to have is herb/alch so you can make all pots/elixirs/flasks that you want.

If you want to make money I'd recommend mining/ench so you can dis all drops in a dungeon and find arcane crystals.

Problem with LW/skin is taht you cant profit too much of devilsaur leather/set. And mostly you will need help to farm devilsaurs (split loot/profit in 2)

Conclusion: 50 people want devilsaurs, 1000 people want pots/elixirs/flasks.

You think there aren't 1000 people that are going to be farming dreamfoil and gromsblood?
It's endless, whatever you choose there'll be a massive amount of people doing the same thing. I still say pick whatever you want in terms of professions.

Take it if you want it. It's not the most profitable profession, but it's an easy one to skill up. Killing hundreds of beasts for leather gives XP too. Doing laps around zones for ore/plants doesn't. Of course you could fight your way to the nodes, but you can't just sit and farm a spot like you can with leather. With skinning, your resource is on the mobs themselves, so you can just camp any area with a lot of beasts and grind both XP+Leather at the same time. If you want your dino leather, get help for them if you can't solo them. The difficulty just means you can charge more for them. If no one wants to buy them, then do something else with your time. Just farm regular leather. It was always valuable, and you can kill non elite beasts, or so I would hope, with little effort.

It's grindy... but not really a pain. The issue is that there's no money to be made off of it, as most of the stuff from Engineering requires Engineering to use. This means you're stuck using all the stuff rather than selling it, which you can do, as most of it is bombs. I suggest using them in combat rather than vendoring them for a pitiful return unless you're already leveled past their skill bracket. The good news is that the profession can eventually make some really good BoP trinkets(see Net Gun). Also, you have Mining, which is always an option to make the money for you in farming ore. You don't have to create to make money, you can simply farm a resource then sell it. Farming something like thorium ore was very profitable, especially since it has rare gems on the nodes which are in high demand for other professions.

There always will be someone doing LW, I'd just not recommend it for most people ;)
