ok

They despawn after ~12-24 hours.

Incorrect, only after a server reset.

I honestly agree, it looks pretty stupid. It's useful when you show up at TM, XR, etc and see a ton of them and know that there has been a recent attack and possibly some neckbeard ally v with nothing better to do than gank lowbies is still around. However, that really becomes irrelevant when the skeletons last for several hours to a day.

It looks really, really stupid when you go into a quest area like a cave and the entire ground is literally paved with bones.

why are the skeletons a problem, its a good indiction if you need to be careful in case of gankers and such.
they do not make the game slower at all, and you know the only reason they are everywhere is because of the overpopulation on this server

I like the skeletons staying around for at least 24 hrs. Shows you where others have died and gives you a headsup to be careful.

It's one of those little things that go a long way. Like others have said, it makes the game feel more alive. It's a stamp that a player was here recently and got destroyed.

It's a crowded PvP server. You ALWAYS have to be "careful of gankers" in any contested zone.

And as others pointed out, the skeletons can last 24+ hours...you have no idea how old the skeletons are, so they're not a very accurate representation of recent activity.

even so it can indicate it is also a horde popular area, or that the mobs there are dangerous

Already suggested:

Administration weighed in on it; doesn't affect server performance:

That said, I like seeing them, especially when they're layered so thick you can't see the ground. It's a nice change of pace from the barren and devoid world of retail where skeletons are a rare sight.
