That was more due to the administration policies than anything else. ED peaked at 1.7k during winter 2013-2014, before The Great Purge happened.

I think the general consensus is that summer is typically the time that WoW gets a nice peak in population but Blizzard typically tried to release around the winter months so this typically had an increase as well.

I wonder if there are official numbers on this, that would be interesting to see spanning from maybe Vanilla to Cata. Basically before it went to shit.

Never played on ED, I was talking about the TBC server. During July/August '14, it would get up to around 1300 online on the weekends. When I played again in January/February, it was down to like 700 online on the weekends.
