Well I can say this.. in retail BC, I had to maintank sunwell- incl brutallus, the boss who hit so hard you had to rely on some luck of rng to survive... with a caster shield, because tank shields simply did not exist in our drops.. did manage to get server first brutallus with a caster shield though, got some salt for that xD

we also never saw a single tsunami talisman ever, and despite barely missing server first on illidan, and farming every week.. only ever saw one warglaive.. an offhand. Meanwhile guilds after us had 3 and 4 sets..

in terms of vanilla, saw endless nemesis drops. Especially on ragnaros, double nemesis was almost guaranteed.. despite farming MC every week even into naxx and AQ, only ever got two pairs of bloodfang off him.. was only able to complete my bloodfang set in vanilla because some of us were bored after we stopped raiding and stole a raid ID lol

oh, cleared mop 10man heroics with a melee heavy group(2 fury warrs, dk, ww monk +tanks) went almost an entire tier with only one weapon drop for them.. mind you, gear scaling became absurd in MoP, and one tier is really 2 tiers just with the same art

so Im not saying loot isnt bugged, but if its a case of rng being total shit- then thats just blizzlike ><

The loot tables were reverse-engineered as early as mid-late retail vanilla by using guilds DKP databases to compare hundreds of samples of boss loot from one specific boss.
Comparing samples you'd see what items would never drop at the same time and vice versa. The large sample pool and the elimination method rules out the RNG aspect of loot. Players were able to deduce the drop rates on items and what pools on a boss loot table those items belonged to this way.

iirc one discovery made by this method was that no bosses above MC(excluding rag) could drop duplicate non-tier items, which is the case on Nostalrius right now (triple Crul'shorukh he-he, Nefarian shouldn't even drop more than 2 non-set loots, excluding the head).

There's a bit more to it than just this, but literally all of it has been reported and is on the bugtracker.

I can confirm loot tables are bugged to all fuck. In last night's BWL, we got four T2 gloves (plus two offpieces) off the Drakes. Only two should drop per week.
