It will never be too late. This is true because there will never be a forced expansion down your throat before you're ready to move up. The realm will sit on Classic forever. Some players or guilds might eventually leave, but unless a new king server comes out that eats 99% of the population(unlikely), there will always be people here.

If you're the type of person that has an "all first or nothing" mentality, then I question how you enjoy the game to begin with. It doesn't matter if you're the first or last person to down a boss, as long as it gets downed. The only reason there was a time limit was because of Blizzard's greed and them forcing the next expansion down your throat. Well, Blizzard isn't here anymore. So take your time and enjoy the game, the way it should have been.

you should be able to get 60 and join a bwl guild within a week or two of hitting 60. AQ is still a couple of months away, you have plenty of time to gear up and be ready for that!

Once you get your bis and 60 you barely have to play the game (raid 3-4h a week, gold for raid 4-6h a week), so yeah its a slack. It's not a lot to do so you'll catch up in a snap.
