Not true. I met a Chinese player over in Emerald Dream that explained Pinyin to me.
Pinyin, or Hanyu Pinyin, is the official phonetic system for transcribing the Mandarin pronunciations of Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan (Republic of China),[1] and Singapore. It is often used to teach Standard Chinese and a pinyin without diacritic markers is often used in foreign publications to spell Chinese names familiar to non-Chinese and may be used as an input method to enter Chinese characters into computers.

So lame! I actually studied with some Chinese and Taiwanese students during my exchange time. And when the Taiwanese students introduced themselves as being from Taiwan, the Chinese would openly respond with "you are not from Taiwan, you are from China". Very annoying behaviour.
The Taiwanese students were actually very open and always hung out with the other international students. But the Chinese students only socialized with each other (with 1 exception, out of a total of like 30 Chinese students). Can't say I got a very positive image of Chinese people there. And that is being confirmed by my experience with them in the bg's on Nostalrius.
