Do I smell two movements clashing with one another? I can see it now: angry protesters outside the Nostalrius office waving posters saying #LookingForGroup and #World.

Good posts Drain + kotic. I use both LFG and LookingForGroup as well as world and I have to say, I hate using world for this purpose for the exact reasons you listed. I hope more people join LookingForGroup!

So that guy can join all the channels he needs to join, no problem.

The point is that you with this type of system, you can filter out the level-tiers you don't want/need to see.
If you have a 60 + a 24 alt, join /lfg and /lfg30 - and you wont get spammed down with all the other level.

It makes more sense because we'll avoid the all-in-one channel where no one can make any sense of whats happening because there's hundreds of people spamming it.

For the record i've joined /world, and i join it for the same reason that i don't always leave general when in the Barrens; it can be amusing as a side show to keep you occupied whilst doing something else. lfg is focused... and so also could trade be.

Having a 15sec time out on LookingforGroup would be nice... I remember a certain someone spamming for a tank for scholo 5 times in 15secs in /world. I am leveling holy (yes, stupid decision for a priest, but that is my play style) so doing a dungeon slightly lower for me an yield better exp than questing solo sometimes. Also, for those tween dungoens, like DM/VC, Gnomer, etc, where would you lfg for it? both channels? Like Deadmines is 18-23 (23 is pushing it) so would you lfg10 or lfg20? Gnomer is 28-34, /lfg20 or /lfg30? Oh the complexity. Just keep it one channel, there isn't that much spam to weed through the chat.

In world there is more than lfg spam in world which is why the lookingforgroup channel would be better than world. Hell, yesterday there was politics and movie banter in world, and that is okay. That is what it is there for, not looking for more....

Good points, but wouldn't this be easily solvable by shifting the channels 5 levels or whatever.. they're not set in stone anyways, plus you'd start instances at around 15 (meaning 15-25, 26-35 etc)
And when you're in the "in between" levels, you'll join the new channel and carry that over for a level or two before leaving :) The whole point is still to avoid the lfg-spamming from those large level ranges you're not eligible to join anyway =)
