The original design of the game was more or less structured by giving each side different advantages and disadvantages.
Alliance's first base, Stonehearth Bunker is terribly bad situated for defence, practically in the middle of the field with nothing but the few mines before it. Likewise SHGY and IWB dont have any real barrier protecting them. On the opposite end, the horde would get the chokepoint advantage for their first tower and gy, and a better concentration of units.
The compensation would be for the deeper base. After FWGY, the village and keep areas aren't too difficult to bypass for Alliance, while the bridge of Dun Baldar and the decent firing range from the bunkers would make it much easier for Alliance. I think what people find annoying is that due to the design flaws in the Dun Baldar ledges, Horde can largely invalidate this part. For argument's sake, it'd be more or less if you could climb from the Field of Strife to the rez area of IBGY, invalidating the Horde's map advantage.
It is what it is.
