Here's my input on the whole thing.
Need - If you need it, then Need roll it. This means an upgrade in gear, or a recipe that you need and will immediately use. If you are not planning to immediately use it you don't actually "need" it. Example: Two warriors in a group, one tanking, one DPS. A shield drops. Both warriors can use it, the tank needs it, the dps doesn't, tank should get the shield. If tank has a better shield, item defaults to the second warrior. If the second warrior doesn't need it for an upgrade, it's an open roll for disenchant/money.
Greed - If you plan on selling it then you want it out of greed, therefore Greed roll. Example: Two warriors in a group, one tanking, one DPS. A shield drops. Both warriors can use it, the tank needs it, the dps wants to disenchant it, tank should get the shield. If the tank has a better shield, it's an open roll for disenchant/money.
Chests - Since you don't know what's in the chest before opening it and all the items inside will be BoE everyone does a /roll for it and the winner gets the loot.
Exceptions - BoE blues and epics. A lot of the time people will say they absolutely need the item for their character they actually turn around and sell it. You don't know who is going to be honest and who will lie through their teeth out of greed. If the item can universally be profitable for everyone like a BoE blue or epic item or recipe then everyone rolls Need (originally was Greed but someone would always wait until everyone rolled and then roll Need).
That's just my 2 cents, you decide how it's spent.
