I'd like to see a second server if the population continues to grow. particularly one in the United States. A large portion of players are Anerican so that would allow them to enjoy playing on a local server.

2nd server is a bad idea if the current server can hold 10k online.

You do not want to split the player base.

Yeah it can be a pain to level, but it's a short term problem. If you open additional servers you then run the risk of having dead servers in the future.

Look at every MMO released past WoW. Launch is very busy, people complain about queues, demand additional servers. Then a few weeks later, people complain about servers being dead and demand merges.

A server based in the US would be shut down by Blizzard fairly quickly.

I fully agree on this point. Second server would just split population in half and that would be devastating for numerous players. Don't forget that this is a temporary problem and it will go away in a few weeks. And hey, we all wanted Blizzlike server, how is there anything more Blizzlike than this? Realms back then had almost 20k players peak time if I'm not mistaken, and about 5-6k at lowest. Server population is one of the huge factors so many new players are coming every single day. Yesterday it was 6,3-6,4k people online at one point, I mean how awesome is that? Why would you split that perfection only to get 2-3 boars faster even though that problem will perish in couple of weeks max.

Well, 5k players on the server is very fun, and already has downsides too when it comes to leveling and farming professions.
Keep in mind that retail vanilla servers had an estimated 2k5 population.
If really we are heading toward 10k players, don't you think it would be a good idea to open a 2nd server? If both servers had the same pop or slightly less than Nostalrius during last week, then it would be all fine for social aspects. If one day the population is dropping, which I doubt, then it would still be possible to merge them.

It not like fe**ix servers. Here, they would use the same "code", and same DB, and it would be possible to split / merge servers almost at will. It is even possible to have common BG queues, with some development.

It is possible we only have a temporary peak population, and then we will keep one server. But what if it continues to grow at the same rate for weeks? We better be prepared. If it ends up completely unplayable, or with login queues, then it will also "split" the population as many people would leave, and it would be disastrous too.

Edit: Daemon posted here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3024#p27299
He said 5k is the current limit of the server to have 0 lags. Over 5k, we have lags, and at 6k, they clearly are noticeable.
They are working on optimization in order to increase the performance, but will it scale infinitively? Of course not.
Nostalrius has a very good quality, and I believe that as long as crashes are rare, and there is no lag, players will continue to flow in. Or we "refuse" more players (nightmare login queue), or we have to find a scalable solution. A new server is a solution. If you have a better one, please suggest.

It's a tough one, I think it would be a bad idea to open a second server as I fully expect people to not hit max level and quit.

I might be wrong, time will tell. I would rather play on a full server with a queue, than have 2 medium servers however.

I've heard stuff about this Kroonos server, so numbers might quieten down then.

They didnt, many high pop servers had 10k concurrent users online with 40k users being tied to them.

While it wasn't me who originally said that, I do not think any servers had 10k users online at any given time.

I can't confirm the 2k5 pop either.

I would say it's probably around 10k on today's servers.

If you are right, then yes we should at least try to reach 10k online with no lag before thinking about opening a 2nd server.

How do you know it was 10k? I hold the 2k5 from another player's post on this forum, and also it looked like relevant when comparing the crowd here with my retail memories. If you have a source for the 10k pop cap in vanilla, please share!

I would prefer have to wait until log in instead a second server. A second server is a bad idea, meavy now the population is really high, but it wont be in the future.
