Not sure what they want to do with such a system ...
If I want to buy a character, I will not use such an auction => I lose money, and I don't know the character I am buying ?

there's an armory on you can see the character you want to buy.
edit : I figured out this option is not available for Kronos at the moment, nothing garantee it won't be later.

How is Nostalrius going to sustain itself?

first, do not quote me if you summarize crudely what I say.

To answer your question, nostalrius have been online since 2010 and never monetized anything.

Those servers projects (there's plenty), like Twinstar or Feenix, are not only sustaining their servers, they do make money for themselve illegaly.
Moreover, they generally tend to be easily corrupted because what they want first is money.

It's an open secret, but if you do not belive it, take a look at Claudian's note about feenix.

There's a thin line between "sustaining a server" and "making money illegally". By definition, any money made from a private WoW server are made illegally - no matter if its from vanity donation rewards, or character auctions. Don't act like Twinstar is same as Feenix, don't act like Nostalrius can't become like Feenix - greed is what plagues the private server industry, and nobody can predict which project is going to get taken over by it. What happened on Peenix is the worst case example, and I'm fully aware of what's going on there (been playing there for a long time, read what Claudian wrote about a year ago, probably). From what we have now, nobody can determine which server is going to end up better - Kronos or Nostalrius. Although what I can say with no doubt, it'd take a lot for any of these realms to fall as low as ED.

What concerns me, is making money of it with lucrative purpose, which is a gross misconduct, that's what I'm talking about.
If you are caught by your government doing it, you won't be judged like your was only runing a private server voluntarily with no personal interest.
Personally, I think that's immoral and I don't want to support that.

About Twinstar, you are free to belive what you want, and so do I.

Since they are runing a cash shop on their website (to summarize, I won't redo the whole thing) they are not a good choice in my opinion.

Its all a Quality vs Quantity issue:

The main reason Feenix (Emerald Dream) maintains its population is because the players still on that server are not that picky about how classic and blizzlike their World of Warcraft experience is they just want to be around the larger community and play WoW for the sake of playing it. If Feenix made their server any less blizzlike than it already is I really don't think they'd lose that many players just because the ones that really care about quality have already went in search of greener pastures.

Its a sticky situation because to get more players you generally need to already have an established player base, word of mouth gets out a lot faster with 1000 people talking about it versus 100. This server just needs to hope it gets a good start with population and the community is able to promote it well enough that even the people they invite to join end up getting other people to join, that's how the retail version of WoW became so successful back in the day.

From what we have now, nobody can determine which server is going to end up better - Kronos or Nostalrius.

Both Nostalrius and Kronos have run for a few years before.
On Nostalrius, there was absolutely no bonus for players. No levels to buy, no gold, no mounts or vanity items : Nostalrius never had a shop. They never gave any vote reward either.
Since 2010, no vote rewards and no shop, any beta tester can say it.

I don't know if it was the same for Kronos, but Nostalrius offers me very strong guaranties regarding their real motivations.

True. But I seriously don't understand how Nostalrius supports itself. As far as I know, both Kronos and Nostalrius have died in the past because of very small population, as they've only appealed to Czech and French users respectively. Now both are going international, and while Kronos apparently had the money to run a massive advertising campaign and attract many users, several of whom I know from ED, Nostalrius looks severely underpopulated. That's the main source of my concern right here, a server with donation services and large population would be still better than a completely no donations server with a smaller playerbase. That's how vanilla works, community is the key. ED would be a dead server if this were not the case.

To be honest, kronos "massive advertising campaign", if there's realy one, doesn't impress me at all.
Nostalrius doesn't look that underpopulated in comparison, btw they have atm more likes than Kronos.
Moreover, I don't think they have that many users really interested in playing on their server, they just benefits of their playerbase which come from their others servers (regarding wiews/forum).
It seems they also started advertising before nostalrius, so here's some explainations about the gap.
