My own first character (shaman) i think i leveled him as a weird hybrid spec of resto/enhancement but i had no intentions of healing... didn't even consider my stupid spec until i reached late 30's.

- always drank and ate at the same time. I thought this would help me regenerate. Played warrior
- tanked with 2 handed weapon. I thought aggro was generated by pissing mobs off. Pummeling them with large 2 handed weapons seemed more annyoing to me then stabbing them with a small sword.

Thanks to everyone for some very nice confessions. I love to read this stuff.

Now, I've always been keen on reading wikis and guides before I play so I can't contribute much but... I just remembered my first instanced dungeon - Wailing Caverns - and I used rockbiter weapon and earth shocks because they were my best damage spells at that level. The bear druid was going nuts telling me to stop "taking aggro" and I didn't have a clue...
Then I went to wowwiki and typed in "threat".

I used Glowing Brightwood Staff with +30 int enchant all the way up to 70. I discovered spell power after being kicked from a Shattered Halls group because of my abysmal dps.

I also remember this warrior that were going to tank Zul Farrak. He said he had tanked a lot of dungeons, and I'm sure he had, but he didn't even have defensive stance. He obviously never did his class quests.
That must have happened to a lot of players.

Hahaha please keep this thread going. This stuff is GOLDEN.

My turn (please don't tell anybody):

I discovered this game when I was around 8. One of my friend was playing it at the time, but he would never let me play. I use to sit next to him for HOURS on end, just to watch him play (you can imagine how hyped I must have been to play the game). He gave me the user manual for wow when I turned 9 (I use to read it every night when I went to sleep and dream about how I would make my character. I knew the book off by heart.) I told my parents about the game, but they didn't want to buy it for me. Eventually they caved and bought it. I introduced all my friends to the game and all our primary school years were spent playing and discussing wow (when we weren't playing marbles, pretending to be characters from DBZ or playing with yu-ghi-oh cards). I would love to tell you guys about our n00b adventures together, but the story of our stupidity is simply to gigantic to be retold (you may safely assume that our n00bishness knew no bounds). We played through vanilla, TBC and WotLK together ( by the end of which we were slightly less noob, but not by much...

When we reached high school we realized that we were total nerds and that our chances of ever knowing female companionship was absolute zero, so we dropped wow and attempted to become sport jockies...

Here I am again though, many years later :P

My collection of WoW-screwups (with the help of you all):
-Thought Murlocs were...cute.
- I thought Teldrassil island was the whole game area, and the point of the game was to kill spiders there until you hit 60 and then go raid somewhere.
-didn't know you could "link" items on chat, so had to type ALL the caracs of the item in order to sell it..."Selling Sword of the Tiger, +3 agility, 1,80 speed, 2,10 DPS, 10-15 damages"
- I shat myself when i first saw the gigantic ancient protector tree thing. I thought it was a raid boss or something.
- I thought this game had permadeath, and after you died you could only play as a ghost.
-the very first green item i got i tried to equip and that message popped up "equipping this item will cause it be become soulbound" and me being a noob, I thought if i put it on I would never be able to equip any other piece of gear in that slot.
-Spended 2 weeks to get (insert insanely hard-to-get item) and disenchanted them instead of enchant
-First time someone sheeped a mob, I attacked it thinking, "Oh, it's a sheep now! I can one-shot a sheep!" Oops.
-- I was affraid to die, because I thought somebody could loot me
-When I first played the game I thought the Mulgore 1-6 zone is whole world and was wondering where are all the players. After leaving starting arena and discovering whole Mulgore I thought: "This world is huge". Then I stepped into Barrens and was like: "wow".
-- In the first weeks i saw so many players who are in the guild "AFK". I was very impressed about the size of this guild...
-For some reason i thought that fully broken gear couldn't be repaired ever. So if i had a decent piece of armour that was almost broken i put it in my bags in hope of maybe repairing it later.
- thought I could track horde with Track Beast
Back then, WoW was very confusing but wonderful! So happy to be able to do it again soon! :D

Orc Shaman. I thought the class sucked at level 8 or so or 10 because the mobs just got harder and harder. 2 starter characters later, i realized that you had to repair your weapons and armor.

I could find the next town over because i didn't think you needed to run that far. I mean, that was a lot of time spent running!

But, I'm still a newb because to this day, I think gnomes are the best race ever. They're just awesome. The dance, their voices, the way they run, everything. I paid 800g just for that orb of <something> that would turn me into a gnome for just a few minutes.

I remember that for some reason I thought that the longer your cloak was, the better it was.

Also I remember thinking Fade (the priest spell) made you go into some kind of half-stealth for other players (kind of like stealth in starcraft 2 / heroes of the storm). When my brother told me it didn't do that I didn't understand why the spell existed at all, all it does is make my character transparent and it says it "reduces threat" What do they mean by threat? This spell is worthless!

I came from EQ where death penalties were a very common thing, so when I played wow I thought the spirit healer at the GY was the only way to rez until lvl 22ish.... I was very adhd and never bothered reading the text
