The problem isn't just the hardware; the "world" simply isn't meant to hold as many people as it is holding now. I'm talking both the design of the world and the code that supports it. Can you imagine the AQ event with 8-10K people in one zone? You can be running on a Supercomputer and it will still crash.
And peacehammer this is a PvP realm, quit trying to split our population. If you want a PvE server then go play on a PvE server.
So which is it: (a) a PvE realm won't work because no one will want to leave the PvP realm so it will be low pop, or (b) a PvE realm will split the population and leave barely anyone on the PvP realm? It can't be both.
And as Peacehammer said, no one has created a decent Vanilla PvE server - and it's not for lack of want from players. There is an untapped market out there for a quality PvE realm.
Look, despite the lag and the dearth of materials to mine/harvest, I don't think we're at the tipping point yet. We've hit 8K users on the weekends but are still averaging 3-4K during the week. When we're averaging 3-6K during the week and over 10K on the weekend, then Nostalrius will have the user base to easily support two realms - whether or not one is PvE.
