How Safe are our Characters

*This isn't a post about one particular incident but a concern I'd like to share with the community on Nostalrius*
A while ago, a fellow guildie lost his level 60 character - you can read about it here:
https://forum.nostalrius.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4017
The admins kindly provided IP logs, the guildie quietly and determinedly levelled another 60, and all seemed forgotten while many of us changed acc names, and made up elaborate passwords. Occasionally I'd see other players lose their chars, only to be told 'no restore policy'.
Today, another guild member has had his level 60 character deleted. This was probably Grizzly's most valuable character, one which posted about flask acquisitions, rare recipes. More than that, it was someone's character that they had worked hard on, levelled, acquired gear, played and raided with. And always kindly made pots and potions.
It could easily have been anyone's character, alliance or horde.
It's no secret that Grizzly and other community members have forced to light some unfortunate incidents recently of GM abuse. And the admins this time around are proving less than forthcoming. Yes I'm sure some will post below - assuming this isn't locked - that he shouldn't have shared acc info or shouldn't have had 1234 as his pw (none of which he did).
As a player here, I'm wondering how safe our characters are when they can be deleted so easily, how safe my own character is. There are no logs, or at least none offered that could help us identify who did this. There is no restore function and no help from the admins.
This is something I feel the community should be made aware of, whether the player is a guildie, a friend, alliance or horde.
