I would come back to wow in a heartbeat if blizz made vanilla servers. I would love to experience it all again. By the way I don't mean this as a knock to current WOW, it's just something I would find incredibly fun.
I think the biggest challenges for an idea like this are a) would it be interesting enough to keep playing, and b) would there be enough sustained interest from other players to make the world feel alive. I could easily see the outcome being people logging in, going "wow the game is so much better now," and logging out. (CM_Lore)
IMO seeing how popular uh "theoretical" vanilla servers seem to be, I would say there is at least some demand.
Sure, there's definitely interest, even internally. We just don't think there's enough to offset the costs. (CM_Lore)
Personally, I'd 100% expect it to be something almost everyone just pokes at for a week or two and then drops. (CM_Lore)
Not really an effective use of time for devs who could be working on any number of features for the live game. (CM_Lore)
Speaking for myself, I'd love to go back and poke at classic. I just don't think I'd play it for long. (CM_Lore)
Or, the devs could just 'go back to the core roots', as it were. Yep, especially the class designs, every class used to be fun, but in WoD.
If that's the case, I think we'd rather focus on fixing the modern game. (CM_Lore)

The modern game is dreadful, commercialised boring shite.

Ya judging by this server vanilla seems like something people would just poke around on and drop. And the interest doesn't offset the cost? They aren't making 5+million x $15 a month? hm

EQ has just launched another Progression server. It's full to the rafters and is an easy source of cash.
I can only wish Blizzard have a spark of common sense.

Like they suggest, the majority of their player base wouldn't be interested. The people who still play retail like retail and what it offers, or they wouldn't be playing it.
On the bright side, with quality realms like Nost poking around, we don't need to pay Blizzard to provide something that's already available.

I think it shows one of the reasons of Nostalrius' bigger than average success : the WoW community (the Blizzard one) is now, more than it ever was, aware of the vanilla servers and their success, and if a CM answered about it then even Blizzard probably acknowledges it. Again, they would make it if it was a safe way to make money, and it's not.
Plus, they would probably want (or need, as their reputation would be engaged) to polish it (new models, absolutely no bug, working well on modern hardware and software, more video settings...) and in the end they would not be using a 1.12.1 client at all. More like a modified modern client and a modified server code&database, and all of this has a cost.
Then again how could they know what to keep and what to fix ? A lot of people would love new models but identical gameplay. Some wants the whole package. Same things about the user interface. Who would they listen ?
Okay, the last change about flying mounts "might" mean they actually have a real game designer in their office.
Hopefully they would output something good. But if they don't, they'll never try something like this again.
And that's probably why they won't ever release a vanilla server.

Thank you for being someone who actually understands why Blizzard will neverâ„¢ release legacy servers. They would also have to OPENLY admit to themselves AND the public that their previous stance was wrong. In addition to that, they would also imply that they fucked up the game so bad, a previous version is actually considered better (possibly more popular?) than the current one.
On top of that, they would have to publish a client that's a "one fits all" type of deal. There are just SO many variables to account for, it wouldn't be that easy and really wouldn't be as much "sure" monetary hype. BUT at the same time, they keep losing subs and the WoD hype actually got them 3 mil more than they have now, due to the whole "nostalgia" deal they did. So I can see them seriously considering this an option like 2, maybe 3 years down the road.
