How to survive world PvP on Nost

by Sham » Wed Jun 17, 2015 12:27 pm

I see many people having troubles leveling on Nost due to alot of ganking all around. Its particualrly bad in STV and Thousand Needles. A question "where do I level to avoid ganking?" is rather common. My small guide is not about how to avoid ganking. Since you cant. Its about how to be prepared for it to reduce number of deaths by quite alot.

1. Enter new zone to start questing when your level is abit higher then recommended. This way not only mobs will be easier to kill, but you're less likey to be attacked by enemies since they usually seeking for an easy prey.

2. Always watch around all the time when you doing quests and killing mobs. Im alwas rotating my camera and watching my back during casting, so I spot enemies before they start nuking me or get close. This simple measure will save you many times. If enemy is clearly moving towards you, retreat and put yourself in a good position for a fight.

3. Dont let mobs drop your health too low. Because if youre at 30% health and enemy ganks you, you're pretty much dead. Im playing warlock for example and its very easy to go low on health by life tapping like crazy. Just dont. No need to waste all the mana, just put few dots and shoot with wand till mob dead. Lifedrain to gain health back if you need. But always try to keep it above 70%. So you had time to deal with sudden gank and not die instantly.

4. If you planning to do a long questing session, ask a mage to make you best quality food and drinks for your level. Offer him a small tip - the mage will appreciate it even if its just 10s. Having supplies to quickly replenish health/mana is crucial for survival. Also make sure you always have bandages and at least few potions. Sometimes you can buy them really cheap. I bought several stacks of Superiour Healing Potions for just 25s/stack and they saved my ass many times from long graveyard run. Besides its a nice morale boost when you defeat your enemy being prepared.

5. When you go back to capital for training skills, check AH for cheap gear. Sometimes you can get big upgrade just for few dozens of silver and it will make a difference for several levels ahead. Aim for items with Stamina. Just dont go crazy with shopping, dont forget you need gold for your mount and high level stuff. Dont waste more then 1g for leveling items. Expensive blues you see on AH are usually for twinks who play low level BGs, not for leveling characters. Also its recommended to do few runs of every instance to gear up on the way to 60.

6. If you see enemy farming your quest mobs, before attacking him you have to understand - after rez he will most likely want to have his revenge on you. So if your plan is just to level as fast as possible, welcome him with /greet emote. Seeing this emote enemy will understand you're here not to give him troubles and after your friendly gesture he might even not join when other his faction member attacks you. Im judging from personal experienc. Im hardcore ganker myself who has every enemy kill on sight as long as not grey or red. But those friendly emotes really have impact on your desire to kill.

7. Watch around not only for enemies, but for allies too. Try to stay as close to them as possible so that they could come for help when you're attacked. At least know where they are and retreat to their location if got in trouble. Macro "/say HELP!" to quickly ask for help.

8. Dont be shy to ask for buffs if ally player passing by didnt buff you himself. Being buffed or not makes huge difference in PvP. And ofc buff allies yourself.

9. Learn how to navigate among mobs to not aggro whole zone. This is especially important when you're running from ganker. If you aggro mob, he will daze you and you're most likely will be killed. Dont panic, choose safe route, avoid mobs.

10. If you're doing quest chains, its a good idea to ask in zone chat if anyone else doing it and group up. YOu have much more survival chance if grouped with others then when you solo.

11. If you see ally member attacked and your help might give impact on the outcome, do it. Dont just run by. You might die, yes, but this time you helped him, next time he will help you. Besides in good PvP long lasting friendships are born. And every PvP experience is learning one.

12. If you never played vanilla, watch several oldschool PvP movies for your class. Those dating 2005 when game was still new. You might learn new tricks and PvP moves from legendary players which will help you during your leveling experience. Vanilla classes are very different from WoD and there are many things you most likely dont know about them.

13. Dont be upset about 60 level players killing you. There is nothing you can do and you have to understand its a part of leveling experience. But if you get mad, its "mission accomplished" for them. If you shrug and move on, its mission failed. Your goal is to learn how to survive ganking from players 1-4 levels higher then you, where you can survive if careful and prepared.

14. Do dungeons. It's good for gear and time you spend in the instance is time you're not getting a colonoscopy.

Great tips for newbies! Nice to see that there are still people assisting others, instead of comments like 'leave if you dont like it.'

Try to get an idea of when the server is gonna be peaking (7k-9k players) and when its in its off hours (3.5k-5k). North American players would want to play during hours that peak from their time but are off hours for Europe and vice-versa. I'm an NA player (EST) and so I am 6 hours behind the servers time. The peak hours internationally seem to be weekdays 5pm - 8am server time. This is because there is a bracket for European players from 5pm - 11pm (+/- a couple hours) for those coming home from work, assuming people in Europe "work". Another bracket is for North American players starting on the East coast at 11pm server time (5pm EST) and ending at about 8am server time and 11pm (PST). Of course its shuffled an hour back at a time as you move west. So 5pm - 8am server time for weeknights is when you're most likely to have ganking issues.

Weekends are worse because there is more overlapping time between the two sides of the world. 12pm EST is 6pm server time. Generally speaking 6am - 6pm server time would be bumpin with players, thats why we see 9k on for weekends, you're basically cramming an NA server and a European server together.

The only true way to create a second server would be to have NA on one and Europe on another, keep the PvP, most guilds wouldn't split, no language barrier, reduced lag and you'd still mostly play with the same people as before.

Great tips, I can absolutely agree with all of them and even did most of them myself.

Unless you have quests (pural) for the dungeon, other than gear it would be a waste of time to use them as your main source of experience.

21. Group up with players around you working on the same quest. If it is an item drop quest, at least be aware of each other and look out for enemy players attacking each other.

22. If you get killed a couple times usually there is a quest in another part of the zone or even another zone that you can go to and then come back and work on that quest later. As said already, work on an instance for now, or log in at non peak times to complete this quest.
