Ok what is up with people marking shitty casters

Like every dungeon I do( it happens on retail too but it doesn't matter there you don't run out of mana/cant die, etc) like 90% of the DPS will target casters. Or tanks marking casters with an X or skull. Why???? There are some exceptions to this rule ofcourse, like a caster than can poly a healer or silence /healer mob but otherwise always target a hard hitting melee ffs. Is it because of pvp its imprinted in players minds that casters are dangerous ??

mob casters are not players!!! they usually cast shitty weak spells that do just about as much damage if not 2x-3x less than a melee and have a 2-3 second cast time ontop. wow mob rule here lemme cast my 3.5 second 50 damage fireball

oh you got next to me jk let me then melee you for 200

uhh so annoying doing a dungeon where melee mobs hit 350-400 each second, have enrage or some cleave ability or something ontop and a caster mob with spells hits 120 every 3 seconds and NO they just insist on targeting the fkin casters first and I have to sit down to drink every 2nd fight and DPS are all like ''wtf u terrible healer u oom so quickly'
' and u cant just explain this to pugs

example: Razorfen Downs

Boneflayer Ghoul hits for 190 melee and 270 cleave and can spam it
Frozen Spirit hits for 55--70 Frost Nova(aoe) and 188 melee
Non elite skeletons have a Thunder clap that does 30-40 AoE.

"guys let me mark the skeletons and the spirit they do a lot of AoE damage", I shit you not , words of the last tank I did the run with( and 2 other melee) it was just hard hitting ghouls always being taken out last spamming cleaves on the whole group and me having to drink after every pull

Abilities can definitely make them a priority but even when they don't have any killing them first can be a good idea.

  • A caster will have less armor than other monsters meaning they'll die quicker (reducing the amount of mobs the group has to deal with).
  • Magic damage is not mitigated by armor. This means going full out and pulling aggro off the tank has little effect on the damage suffered by the group as a whole.
  • When trying to move quickly, it's faster to spot the mob which looks different than the others and mark it. Going fast is often more important than picking the absolute best target to kill first.
  • Some tanks may be unfamiliar with monsters' abilities. When in doubt, just kill the one which looks squishiest. To quote Nefarius: "Foolsss... Kill the one in the dress!"

Casters are generally squishy in the dungeons/raids. Can typically be brutalized down and dead, leaving the tank in the meantime to freely prioritize on the more dangerous melee mobs(the ones not CC'd anyway). It makes for faster and more effective runs/use of DPS.

Also mainly cus casters more lethal tanks than melee mobs. Just chain stun/interrupt casters as they go dead.
