Is lag as common as I hear?

by Sadistz » Wed Jul 29, 2015 12:30 am

I'm looking to start playing Nostalrius pretty soon, but a lot of the main complaints about nostalrius I've been reading aren't the bugs, but mostly the lags due to high population. Is this lag common (aka is it normal for there to be over 6500 players online) though? On live, having anything over 200 ms makes me start to not want to play anymore because it's so frustrating, so I was wondering if I'm going to have to get used to playing at high ms on nostalrius.

During the early morning and past 9pm (east usa), the population drops below 5k and it becomes relatively lagless.

During the day though, and especially on weekends, there gets to be 7k+ players online, and yes, the server lags quite a bit. It feels like about 300-400ms. Not unplayable, just a bit slow.

Basically the server only starts to get laggy when there are over 6500 players online, yes. Other times, it's fine.

Admins aren't doing anything about it, as far as I know, so I can only sit here and hope that the population will go back down after the summer ends.

As someone who enjoys PVP way more than PVE, it's almost unplayable as a melee.

it is pretty much unplayable with 7.2k ppl online. melee or not doesnt matter

Laggy but playable, for me.

But then again I'm a priest, so my general questing gameplay is pretty easy and mostly automated.

"Playable" depends on the player. If you're not bothered with waiting 2-6 seconds after pressing a key to see that spell actually starts being casted, then sure, it's playable for you.

I agree with the OP. The lag is so awful.

A lot depends on where you live, if you live in western Europe and have good broadband then there is very little to no lag at all.

I pretty much sit at 22 or 23ms ping nearly all the time, at busy times that can rise as (high) as 50ms but that is rare for me.

My experience is that I occasionally get lag spikes where the whole game can freeze for a few seconds, but I don't get lag on pressing buttons and things happening. Actually sometimes things seem to happen faster than they should, i.e. my cast bar shows i'm still casting but I see the spell in game.

*edit Just logged in right now, 7200 online, ping 28ms

as soon as 5k players are online, the lag slowly begins.
as it hits 6k, the lag is getting terrible, >0,5 delay.
well and the more chars go online the worse it gets. to like 3-4s .

i dont know actual numbers, but like 12h/day the player count is 5k or higher.
and like 6-8h/day its 6k or higher.
and like 4h/day its 7k or higher.

so you quite often got to play with a >0,5 second delay. sometimes more.

it pretty much is this way for about 3 months, with only little advancements. so dont expect it to change so soon.

and no it doesnt matter what internet connection you've got and only very slightly where you're from (the server is in europe, france).
