Abysmal player skills. Does it have to be this bad?

by Nivus » Tue Oct 13, 2015 4:13 pm

When I first joined Nostalrius, I quickly noticed that players would be extremely selective in their dungeon groups with regard to level requirements and obsess over best in slot items as part of their raid preparation. As someone who played vanilla 10 years ago, this was unfamiliar territory. We just kinda winged it back then and while the option to raid 5-man dungeons with more than 5 players helped, we also managed to clear MC with a ragtag band of badly geared players who weren't even all level 60. Certainly nobody cared about "BiS".

I understand this obsession now. The player quality on this server is so utterly horrible that you need maxed-out characters to even stand a chance.

I'm not talking about being behind in your theorycrafting or whatever. I'm talking about basic player skills that you need to succeed in nearly all video games: paying attention, reacting more quickly than a gridlocked government, minimal communication. If you don't care about playing this game at all, why level to 60? Why look for dungeon groups? I honestly can't believe that the average player is this bad because he just can't help it.

I've probably run about 100 PUG dungeons on level 60 by now. I can think of one group where I could legitimately say in the end that everyone did a good job. In at least half, it took all my willpower to not just alt+F4. The others ranged from mildly depressing to somewhat tolerable with one rotten apple or two.

This is bad, folks. I've played League of Legends, lots of it. LoL also has a horrible community of edgy teenagers on a mission to ruin your game, but I'm inclined to say that the LoL community is more professional than what I've seen on this server, despite many Nostalrius players being in their 20s or older from what I can gather. Additionally, many must've played this game before, but what I see in dungeons is unfamiliarity with foundational game concepts coupled with the cocky arrogance of someone who thinks he's seen it all.

I must sound like a total prick by now, so I'll end my rant here. But please tell me, beautiful people of Nostalrius: it hasn't always been this bad, has it? I don't think I've ever spent 6 hours in BRD back when the game was still new. Or is it too much to expect a regular 60 dungeon run to conclude with 3 wipes or less?

Guess who's the common denominator in those groups.

Time to put away the rose-tinted glasses, retail vanilla had it's fair share of noobs and assholes. The avarage player today is much better at the game and a part of that is being able to gear up properly, WoW is not 100% skillbased, it's alot more dependant on gear than many modern games like LoL but the ability to listen to very polished tactics still seems to be a rare talent.

That's a silly argument in a game where a single player cannot conceivably carry a group that consistently overpulls, where the tank can't hold aggro, where the healer is always afk etc. In LoL, a single good carry player can make up for the faults of his four team mates. In WoW, your group is as good as the worst player. That's the hard reality and no amount of above-averageness on your part will make up for that.

I don't know what reality you live in. The average player quality on this server is vastly higher than it was in vanilla. It's frankly hard to even make a comparison. Sure, every now and then you get horrid groups but neither as bad nor as frequently.

And yes, I played all through vanilla too.

This is way retarded. Everyone knows how vanilla was (even tho the average player skill is really higher than it was then), comparing this with Lol is silly.

I barely had any problems that you mention, sure there are some retarded people in groups, but mostly of them are just people who like to smoke a few joints and play wow.

Wrong, player knowledge (wowhead, all boss fight strats out for 10 years, most exploits/op stuff documented in patch notes and reproduced here already) is higher, player skill is most definitely lower.

I've carried the shit out of pugs as a priest. Having a good healer saves tons of wipes and can absolutely make pugs manageable. I'm going to guess you are a DPS with no cc, which in that case you are totally at the mercy of everyone else.

I play games for fun as a rule. Everything else is gobbledy-gook.
