Server is not "lag free" when 6k people are online

by SuddenDeath » Mon Mar 09, 2015 9:56 am

I don't know about you but as soon as the player count starts going up around 5k+ I notice a little bit of a difference when it comes to the lag of the server. My latency doesn't change but it's as if the server isn't able to keep up to a 100%, not entirely stable so the speak.

It sometimes takes up 250-400ms to cast spells even though it says I have 25ms. The movement gets very delayed when it comes to PvP, very hard to hit other players as melee.

Anyone else?

I've always wondered if it's possible to create another server for battlegrounds, dungeons and raids. Without sacrificing social aspect of the game, as how it would work with crossrealm.

Hi,
I will give some information so that you can have an idea of what is happening.
A stock MaNGOS server can not handle more than 1000 players, or 150 in the same area.
On Nostalrius, we applied several optimizations on that:
- Each map is handled on a separated process. It allows us to have 1000 players per map, but still only 150 on the same area. With that system, we do not need to a server dedicated to battlegrounds, raids, etc ... Since they won't impact overall performance. With that system only, we could not handle more than 3k players (considering that 30% is on Kalimdor for example)
- Several things have been completely modified, to allow other things to be run on the same time. We made a stress test video that shows how many players we can handle. Our goal was to be able to support 5k players without lags. It was hard, but we managed to do it (and we believe that we are like the first private server to be able to support so many players !)
- What is going on now ? We need to be able to handle more than 6k players. This is not an easy task, but we already have several ideas to limit the lag. We hope that we will be able to test several solutions that should together reduce the delay you experience in the next seven days (before the week ending would be great). We will keep you informed, this issue is our top 1 priority with crashfixes.

Some guys are reporting problems when they are logging with 1. or 2. realmlist. I honestly dont think its the right reason, but there may be something.... i was lagfree for like last 2 days, not a single lag. And I was online a lot.

I've never had >30ms either, but there were many occasions, when there were significant delay in abilities (~1sec).
