I expected more, but I'm not that dissapointed

by azamous » Thu Mar 26, 2015 12:14 pm

When I found out about this server, it was a few days before it's initial release. I was hyped. 1.4 loot tables, 'harder difficulty'. I felt everyone was in the same boat, sure you have the people that will nolife to 60, I tried myself, obviously. Told all of my friends, we were all playing and feeling the nostalgia, even through the frequent disconnects (which is to be expected, with the amount of players online and the login servers under such stress).

I expected players to be stuck on Molten Core for a good month or so, especially Onyxia aswell, giving the playerbase more time to get to level 60 and not have such a power gap, infact, just so the community felt more connected over the raid progression on the server. When people start here, and they see that end-game or the current progression has already been cleared, it may kill the hype for them. Vanilla was all about working hard for your gear, like oh wow you have a piece of T1, but who has said that? It's currently not honorable at all, and are these top guilds even feeling any sense of achievement? I've watched the twitch streams, and personally I think that if the content wasn't totally fixed, to the point where you can hit Onyxia through phase 2, and mobs don't spawn, killing Ragnaros without a tank etc, the developers should have just locked the raids and kept everyone spamming UBRS etc for D1. What's even crazier is, I was level 21 when Malthrus dinged level 60, and let's not pretend he didn't use Beastslayer pre-nerf.

I also thought the whole 8debuff thing would make it that much harder, guild rivalry and proper hype behind the 'top guilds' because that's the way it has always been really, there was always a top guild on every server, a famous guild. Take Nihilum for instance, but on this we have GRIZZLY and f*cking NOPE, and we've all seen that hunter that's clueless on his rotation. To be honest, seeing how easy the raids were for these guilds have half killed the hype for me. I've managed to ignore the exploits and the people with epic mounts in the first week, whitekidney saying he's going to open up a 'gold shop' on ownedcore (in the first week, what a hype killer huh? we're all level 30~ grinding and leveling up and he's opening up a gold shop LMFAO) but the raids being easy as-well.... where is this 'difficulty'? I'm in no way trying to slate this server, just state my opinion on these matters, the difficulty was a main selling point for this server, and a lot of veterans are coming back for that kind of grind.

I will be staying here and waiting for fixes, I just hope the server survives that long. :?:

I'm not trying to incite anything but if anyone thought that 8-debuff and 1.4 loot was going to stop people from crushing content that has been figured out for 10 years then they are fooling themselves. Vanilla mechanically wasn't hard. There were other aspects of vanilla that made it appear and seem hard. However, a lot of that is gone today because people are just much smarter and attuned to a game that came out so long ago.

The problem you have is that your thinking MC/Ony/BWL are hard, they arent - there are 5 man dungeons in retail WoW that are more 'difficult', that require you to be more alert than the early raids from Vanilla.

The supposed difficulty will come in from a boss or 2 in AQ40 and in Naxx, and even then that wont be hugely difficult to anyone that has raided at a decent level in later WoW expansions. Naxx in particular is held up as being this mecca of a hard raid (the only real challenge in Nax is gearing folks to start it, none of the fights make lists of hard bosses that the guys who have raided it all in live make - C'Thun does from AQ though)

The server advertised in such a way that it gave off that perspective, there was a lot of misunderstandings IMO, and there's a difference between crushing content and abusing it. But even so, crushing the content in a non-working state is not honorable and has no self achievement, hence the circlejerk posts on the forums already. Indeed, 10 year content and there have been other private servers before this so it's no surprise, I just thought that there would be more community hype around raiding and the changes that were made.

The people who indulge in the mentality of desillusioned idealists opt for self-inflicted pain. Personally, I am awfully busy in life to stop and bicker over the Grizzly or Whitekidney's mentality. Grizzly comments are cocky and assuming, and I dislike them because of that, but other than that I am OK with everything they do in-game.

If you want to spend 6 hours a day, or can afford to spend as much time, in a video game, that is fine by me. We all have our vices and my vice is to have a lot of vices. However, I manage to strike a neat balance between what is important to me and what I enjoy doing.

The reality here is that for the greater number of the player base, the game will not soon lose its appeal, and while I can understand why the sense of disillusionment is so overwhelming to some, I still enjoy the game and the server and look forward to better times.

Nostalrius is by far the most enjoyable project I have played on, and I don't have time nor inclination to go about, visiting on other servers' forums and decry and exposetheir putatively mortal sins.

To broach the subject of people who intentionally sabotage the server, I like to think that if you are petty in a video game, you're a petty in life, and as long as such people can live with themselves, it's fine by me. ;)

The people that indulge in the mentality of disillusioned idealists (meaning the top guilds) want to self harm? That's what you are saying?

Confused by your post, but agree with some points.

See, Nostalrius' success in terms of population is probably of their clever marketing. And as is the case with most private servers, Nostalrius hasn't delivered on top-notch quality as such.

My point is, you have had greater expectations for Nostalrius than what the server really is, and as long as you keep and try to uphold the server to this idealised standard, the more reason will you have to get frustrated with the server and certain aspects. That is what I meant by "disillusioned idealism." And I didn't mean any offence. In fact, I can relate to that, but today I try not to put much store by such things, even though I am a nerd and a staunch supporter of hardcore caming and, on occasion, I indulge in brief session of no-life-ness myself. : )
