Stability/Longevity of Nostalrius?

by dsquidvicious » Thu Feb 05, 2015 7:15 pm

As the topic heading states i am curious about the stability and longevity of Nostalrius.
I have been playing on private servers for many years now, Feenix, Rebirth and Valk to name a few, and many of these servers struggle with things like DDOS, unplanned downtimes, missing devs, psycho devs/admins, legal issues, hardware failures and etc.
Understandably a private server is bound to encounter some of these problems but some problems are much more acceptable than others.

I have confidence in Nostalrius' dev team as they have proved competent and responsive yet I fear things such as legal action or hardware failures may present themselves in the future of this exciting new server.
Furthermore, without any visible means of funding how will Nostalrius be able to pay for the necessary costs associated with hosting and running a server of this calibre for extended periods of time?

I really want this server to succeed and I hope my fears can be proven to be unfounded.

I think that if they add donations for race/faction/class change and certain mounts it will generate enough income and wont have a negative reaction in the community.

Compared to Kronos..

Stability is of course a hard thing to predict.
But for me it's mostly about the fact that Kronos only has one full-time dev.

Who wants to spend countless of hours on a project that one young college guy is working on?
In that age he could be away working full-time for some company that's interested in his skills.
That would mean the server is dead.

In terms of population I think it will be fine. If you take a look at the website statistics Kronos averages around ~100k each month (50% western hits) while Nostalrius is ~85k (70% western). Of course, they have Twinstar behind them that's got 500k each month - but basically all of their traffic is eastern european

Considering how some people throw away money at streamers, if the team has some fun events i'm sure it could generate enough to keep the server bills paid.

Being in Europe additionally helps against legal issues. I had brief discussion with one of the devs concerning that and some other topics (from one of NB youtube videos), here is the ˝legal actions˝ part of it:

Me: " How safe you think you are from some legal actions from Blizzard, in connection to what they did to some North American servers? Of course, I don´t expect you to guarantee me 100% safety, just a couple of (honest, if possible) words about that situation."

NB(unknown dev): "No server can be 100% safe. However, we are hosted in France and I don't know any french server that has been closed due to legal issues (I may be wrong ?). Furthermore, our goal is not to make money with WoW Vanilla : we will not be a pay to win server. So, yes, Nostalrius is not approved by Blizzard, but we are doing all what we can to prevent such issues to come in the future."

Any serious issue with missing / psycho devs and admins seems quite unlikely, based both on what I´ve heard about years of ˝old˝ Nostalrius and what they showed us on NB so far.

The only problem I am worried about is hardware/maintenance cost. That is, I also wonder how stable NB is going to be financially in the long run - speaking of years in the future - in sense of making money to cover the expenses. I also perfectly understand and respect that they might not want to be 100% transparent about that 8-)

Hosting costs have been paid without problems for several years now. No legal issues so far, afaik. Stop worrying about it! :D

none of those are blizzlike at all. what a terrible idea. i hope that if they do ask for some type of donations, that they don't let it affect the game/community and the server by making the server revolve around profits like Feenix/Kronos

If I had the choice to choose between the option to pay for faction/race change, or no option at all, I'd pick the former. It doesn't have to be ridiculously expensive, just an option for the those who want it.

Mounts are trickier. I could see them paying for a mount like the Ivory Raptor or the Frost Ram, but not until you have an epic mount already.

Regardless, any bought with donations should be items or services unobtainable in game.

please no

a lack of donation options is one of the only things that separates us from kronos, aside from being closer to being finished

having donation rewards(race/faction/class changes don't count as vanity) would drive at least a third of players away from this server; and in order to keep our players we need to have no donation rewards whatsoever, and we also need to have no donations at all in order to ward off legal action against the server

I dont understand you. Even if race/fation/class change the gameplay (which i dont think), a server needs donation to keep up. There have to be any reward for the players. Meavy twink items? I dont know what to suggest, but i think that race&faction is the right donation reward.
