Range / Dead Zone Addon

Range / Dead Zone Addon

by xwraith » Fri Aug 21, 2015 2:44 am

I'm looking for an addon that will show the range of your target displayed on-screen.

This is mainly for pvp on my rogue, to help with deadzoning: staying out of warrior melee range, but staying inside of intercept range, or likewise for staying between a hunter's melee and ranged distances, and also knowing when you're far enough way that casters/ranged classes can't hit you, etc.

There is no direct way to check the range,

I think the best way to do such things would be comparing Coordinates with
http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/API_GetPlayerMapPosition

since you're talking about PvP, Coordinates are available both in the world and battlegrounds.
(I'm saying that because it's not available in dungeons, that's why CThunwarner is based on interactranges)

I could imagine creating a way to calculate the range for players you have in target, it should be kinda accurate.
But this method would be impossible to do for players which you don't have in target.

I'll take a look at it this evening/weekend (if I don't forget it)

How would you like to have the range displayed to you? a simple "Range: X Yards" text element which you can drag whereever you like it to be, and which is only visible while you have a target?

EDIT: the function I mentioned can not give Z coordinates, which mean the range I could calculate would not be accurate if eg your target is on a hill above you. It could only calculate the accurate range between you and your target if you're on more or less even ground

Side-question.
I'm familiar with the pros of deadzoning Hunters/Warriors while on a caster.
But what do you get out of it as a rogue?

Is it the theory that while you kite them out, neither of you are getting hits but you're building energy for stuns/free hits?
Is this actually advantageous?

I'm bad and haven't given it much thought since I've played mostly casters in the past. I only had this gut reaction of wondering because on the warrior I'm leveling, I kite back all the time against opponents (mostly mobs) with faster attack speeds. Swing+MS, kite back for 3 seconds, Swing+WW, kit back for 3 seconds.
It strongly punishes melees with faster attack speeds (ie all mobs and most players.) and doesn't hurt my DPS in the slightest (compared to standing there waiting for my swinger timer. Giving up slam is a separate issue.)

Since most warriors are 2H Arms, you kiting back for 3-4s is basically a swing timer.

Deadzoning is huge as a rogue. When you can stay between melee-intercept range vs a warrior as a rogue, you can restealth infinitely, you don't even need gouge if you do it right although it does make things easier. When you learn to restealth easily you can get off more cheapshots and keep your opponent from doing any damage to you. A bad rogue will let you get off free hits while he tries to kite you, a good rogue won't give you a chance to do anything.

Got it. Thanks!
That seems pretty incredibly difficult to pull off. Deadzoning perfectly for 10ish seconds? Talk about earning a stealth reset. Sounds awesome though. Must be extra unreliable on this server with the ping times.

its not that hard with practice. gouge is 5.5 seconds and it takes only about 6-7 seconds to leave combat, not 10, lag isnt usually a problem for me unless its >250ms.

an addon would definitely help with it, but I think it might be impossible to do with 1.12 anyways
