I didn't know that. I haven't played retail for years.

Are there addons in retail that let you scan and snipe auctions automatically?

Just scan and alert when one is found. Automatic buying was disabled I believe in TBC (by making the "PlaceAuctionBid" function "protected", which means that it can only be called by code executed through a hardware event.

My previous post was simply in response to your statement that automatic scanning is not intended. I'm aware that's not solely what he was banned for.

But what's important here is that the availability of automatic buying in vanilla was not a bug or unintentional; they simply changed their mind about it later, which makes banning for it on a blizzlike vanilla server utterly ridiculous.

What's scary about this new development is that while previously with such bans the GMs always said that third party software preventing automatic logout was the real reason for the ban (with people claiming they hadn't used that presumably lying) in this case he literally says that the ban is for using a regular API function.

I wasn't just referring to the automatic scanning. I was referring to the automatic sniping. I suppose I could have been more verbose but I thought it was pretty obvious.

I don't agree that a server should leave itself wide open to AH exploitation and/or other vulnerabilities in order to be considered Blizzlike, and I'm glad Nost's staff agree. Can't please everyone, I guess, but I think Nost is a better server for it.

You literally wrote "finding good auctions to snipe". No, it's not obvious that you meant more than that.

And by "exploitation" you mean "I don't like it"? Clearly it wasn't considered exploitation by blizzard and the argument to consider it that on nost is not better than the same argument for ganking.

You're right. I've changed my mind.

Nost should be completely open to any exploitation (subjectively perceived, mind you) that was possible on Vanilla WoW servers. This would ensure an optimal and enjoyable gaming experience for all players and would make Nost a much better server in the long run.

Thanks for the enlightening discussion! It was a real eye opener.

What about things that other people "subjectively perceive as exploitation", i.e., don't like? Ganking grays? Slacking in a dungeon run? Rolling need on a boe epic they can't use? Ban Ban Ban?

I feel kinda exploited by your sarcasm in that post ... Daeemooon?? Ban please.

I do not agree that addons that automatically snipe auctions should be allowed on Nostalrius.

You think they should be allowed, and you are entitled to your opinion.

What else is there to talk about here?

Well, my point is whether you like it or not (or I for that matter) should be inconsequential because otherwise that's an incredibly slippery slope and people would have to be banned for, e.g., ganking, to be consistent.

I'm not saying it should be allowed because I like it. But we do need a reasonable way to determine if something is allowed. Not your or my or any player's personal opinion - but what then? I can't think of any good way which would be fair for all other than simply adopting blizzard's rules for vanilla.

You said he shouldn't expect leniency because ... why exactly? Because he did something you don't like? I find that incredibly arrogant.

If they did that then the AH would become a complete shitfest as sniping addons would become rampant very fast, to the detriment of those who don't use them or know about them so I question your use of the word "good".

Because I think it's the kind of thing a slimy selfish person would do and he fully deserved his ban. You disagree and that's absolutely your right. I have no problem being perceived as arrogant by someone who sympathizes with such a person.

What are you talking about? It's essentially been allowed from the server start until now. And according to some other GM's posts it seems like it still should be. What could happen exactly that's so bad? Just don't put auctions up for less than you would want to sell them (doh) and you'll be fine.

But actually even if horrible, abominable things happened "to the detriment of those". This has always been part of the game hasn't it? Being camped by a 60 when you're trying to quest in lakeshire is not exactly pleasant but the game isn't about pleasing everyone, never has been.
